The right to swing my fist ends where the other man’s nose begins. – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.*
As a general rule and with few exceptions…..
Conservatives believe the right to property entitles you to deny others the use of your property.
Liberals believe they are entitled to deny you the use of your property.
Conservatives believe the right to property entitles you to choose what you buy or sell with your property, and it entitles you to make or entertain any offer, and accept or refuse any price for such exchanges.
Liberals believe they are entitled to dictate what you will buy or sell, and at what price.
Conservatives believe the right to property entitles you to choose from whom you will buy and sell.
Liberals believe they are entitled to dictate with whom you will trade or from whom you will buy and sell.
Conservatives believe the right to property entitles you upon your death to bequeath your property to whomever you want, without penalty or tax.
Liberals believe that they are especially entitled to your property upon your death to prevent your heirs from inheriting something that their most favored constituents won’t inherit.
Both Conservatives and Liberals believe that the government should not discriminate against you on account of your race, sex, religion, and national origins, but Conservatives also believe that the government should not discriminate against you on account of your property as this is as much a violation of the due process and equal protection clauses of the of the Constitution, as is any Liberal complaint in that regard.
Liberals believe that it is completely legal for the government to discriminate against you on account of your property, but that you may not lawfully BE a discriminate consumer of goods and services, especially if you own too much property.
Both Liberals and Conservatives believe you do not have a right to use your property to hurt someone, much like you may not use your fist to strike someone, but while Liberals take this as grounds for prior restraint of your property rights, Conservatives believe you have as much right to freely use your property as you have to swing your fist, and so unless there is evidence of harm there can be no foul, and thus no penalty under law.
* Although I like this particular quote, I find his interpretations of law to be generally flawed to say the least.
