Democratic Leadership Has No One But Themselves To Blame For Gridlock

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

One of the themes I expect President Obama to complain about in the SOTU address (as well as what will likely be a theme for the DNC in 2014) is the fake crisis of  gridlock.

And yet the Democratic leadership in Congress has perpetuated gridlock through their own actions.

Obama, Pelosi, and Reid love to talk about the virtues of bipartisanship. And yet when it comes to issues like reigning in the NSA or auditing the Federal Reserve, both of which have enormous bipartisan  support, Democratic leadership shoots those efforts down.

President Obama repeatedly tells Republicans that he is willing to talk to them about healthcare reform. And yet, as many Republican Congressmen can attest, their calls to the White House go unanswered.

Despite the fact that ObamaCare passed witouth a single Republican vote in the House, Pelosi continually whines about “partisan” efforts to repeal ObamaCare.

One of Harry Reid’s favorite tricks is to prevent Republican amendments from being offered to bills, even though the Democrats control the Senate. Those amendments could only pass thanks to bipartisanship, which is something Harry Reid  will have nothing to do with if it involves stopping out of control government.

And when the Democratic leadership decides they want to pursue bipartisanship, they insist all issues be addressed in a “comprehensive” manner. Instead of allowing Republicans and Democrats to work together on parts of a broader issue, they shut down progress from the start by insisting that everyone must agree on everything as a prerequisite. The issue is then halted until elections allow a majority to ram bills through.

There is no reason healthcare reform, immigration reform, and trade agreements need to be hundreds or even thousands of pages long. There is no explanation for why farm subsidies and food stamps need to be in the same bill.

The hypocrisy of the Democratic leadership needs to be exposed every time they try to blame the House for gridlock. Of course, it would help if Boehner grew a spine and called them out on it himself.
