Today's surprise announcement by Barney Frank that he will NOT run for re-election in 2012 is important because it is the first overt admission that the Democrats will NOT retake the House next year.
Make no mistake. Frank is ALL about power in Washington. Having it, and more importantly, using it, to promote the far left agenda.
If he thought that there were even a 5% chance that the Democrats could retake the House, he'd be running..and hoping that he had one more chance to swing the gavel as chair of his all-importanrt committee.
But, as has been said many times, being a ranking member is rather, well.."rank"...in that it stinks. Not much that you can do to influence legislation. So why stay on?
I'll give Frank credit for one thing. He knows when it's time to go, unlike a great many of the dem "old bulls" who hang on, well..just because they can. Rangel, Dingell, and Conyers easily come to mind.
This means that the GOP will hold the House for the rest of the decade, and likely increase its majority. This should result in an increasingly CONSERVATIVE GOP House caucus...which is a good thing, a very good thing..
So as we hear all the stories about the Dems "having 25 GOP seats targeted, and putting the House in play", just remember that Barney Frank knew that it wasn't going to happen.
Can't wait to hear Debbie Wasserman-Schultz spin this...
