I suspect that a great many Red Staters, like myself, greatly enjoyed Clancy's novels for over 20 years. The CIA were the good guys, the US military was awesome, and we had a president in the White House, Jack Ryan, that made us wish for the day we might have somewhat like that in the Oval Office.
BTW..Tom Cotton's bio parallels Ryan's to a large extent, but that's a topic for another diary.
Clancy had an uncanny ability to predict future events..including the idea of crashing an airliner into a building, years before 9/11. He got it right, far more often than not.
He was a patriot, he loved this country. Indeed, the dedication to "Executive Orders" reads as follows:
RONALD WILSON REAGAN
FORTIETH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
THE MAN WHO WON THE WAR
The last two major novels featuring President Jack Ryan, "Executive Orders" and "The Bear and the Dragon" deal with a militaristic, expansionist Red China, that threatens both the US and Russia. Indeed, Russia helps America in responding to Chinese threats and attacks, and the US ends up bringing Russia into NATO to help it defeat a Red Chinese invasion of Siberia.
I wonder if Putin read the books?
Tom Clancy left us far too soon. I looked forward to every new book. I wonder what he'd be saying about current events in the Ukraine?
