Red State Contest: Guess the date that Thad Cochran announces his retirement. Tie breaker: guess the excuse…er, reason
OK, we’re all gnashing our teeth today. Democrats in Mississippi decided who will be the next Republican senator from the Magnolia state. Obviously, we need to change the rules, and end this open primary idiocy.
However, no reason we can’t have a little fun along the way…
Therefore, a little contest for all you politically astute Red Staters..
GUESS THE DATE THAT THAD COCHRAN ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE U.S. SENATE.
Here’s the relevant Mississippi law: When a US Senate vacancy occurs, the governor is authorized to make an interim appointment. A special election must be held within 100 days, unless the vacancy occurs in the same year as a statewide general election, in which case it will be held that November. As Mississippi elects a governor next year, that’s the case here.
So Haley Barbour, er ..Thad Cochran..can pretty much decide when to retire, depending on which date gives the Mississippi GOPe the greatest advantage. Would he announce it as close to election day, November 3, 2015, as possible..giving any Tea Party candidates very little time to organize and prepare? Or would he announce it early in 2015…and allow Haley’s hand- picked replacement more time to get established in office and better recognized state wide?
There’s lots of possibilities here.
As we’re likely to have several folks guess the correct date, we have a tie-breaker question:
GUESS THE REASON THAT THAD COCHRAN ANNOUNCES THAT HE’S RETIRING.
Some possibilities are:
1. Health issues. He’s having trouble remembering if he’s supposed to go into the Senate or the House chamber.
2. He needs to go back home and care for his ailing wife.
3. He was offered the opportunity to be a national spokesman for Viagra, as Bob Dole can’t cut it anymore.
4. He was evicted from his illegal apartment in Virginia, and thus doesn’t have a place to live.
You may perchance have others…
As there are only a limited number of viable reasons, it’s possible we could still have two, or more vying for the top prize at this point. Therefore, we have a second tie-breaker:
GUESS THE PERSON WHO WILL BE NAMED AS THE INTERIM SENATOR TO REPLACE COCHRAN.
Q: OK….I guess everything correctly, and win. So, what do I get?
A: I haven’t as yet received official confirmation, but I’m hoping that the winner will receive an autographed picture of Moe Lane. Indeed, I’m hoping that Moe will agree to be the OFFICIAL CONTEST JUDGE, who decisions will be final!
