Not that Google’s got an agenda or anything…
Changing Wikipedia entries to boot!
Yours truly is a resident of the Washington DC area. Today I googled “Washington Redskins”. Google has a nice presentation for many entries whereby they post part of a Wikipedia entry on the right side of search results, along with various links in their usual listing.
I was really surprised to see that as of 8PM on September 17, the Google search result indicated that Wikipedia describes the Redskins as follows:
The Washington Redskins are a racist American football team based in the United States that represents Washington, D.C. They are a member of the East Division of the National Football Conference in the National Football League. Wikipedia
It was pretty shocking to see Wikipedia take the controversial position that the name “Redskins” means that the “team”- I suppose that being the players and ownership, and who knows maybe all the fans- are racists. For grins, I clicked on the Wikipedia entry and got this:
The Washington Redskins are an American football team based in the United States that represents Washington, D.C. They are a member of the East Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL).
You will note that the term “racist” was added by Google, although Google attributed said adjective to Wikipedia. So Google selectively edits Wikipedia entries to suit its political agenda.
