A quick look at 60 votes
It seems everywhere in the news you read that now that the Democrats do not have 60 votes in the Senate, something is wrong with Washington. Here is a simple question.
When was the last time Republicans had 60 votes in the Senate? You have to go back to 1907-1909, during the last term of TR for the Republicans to have had 60 votes (they had 61). They only had over 60 votes one other time, during Grant’s term, and again it was 61 votes.
How many times have the Democrats had 60 votes in the Senate? 12 times. Starting with FDR in 1935, and going through 1943, then 1959-1969, then 1975-1979, then finally from 2008-2009. Basically, during the height of the New Deal, Great Society, and After watergate until almost the beginning of the Reagan era.
At no time has a modern Republican had 60 votes in the Senate.
No wonder Obama thought he was FDR. Now it looks like more and more he is Jimmy Carter…
