I believe Obama, the Coast Guard, and Ken Salazar

Drilling is safe and necessary.  There’s no leak in the Gulf.  After the Deep Horizon sank, every well in the Gulf was inspected and “MMS has completed [May 12, 2010] its inspection of deepwater drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and no major violations were found.” __ Department of the Interior News Release

Then why did the President put 20,000 people out of work on May 27, 2010?

“I take responsibility. It is my job to make sure that everything is done to shut this down,” Obama said at the end of a White House news conference. ” __ CNN

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-Louisiana) said, “we must insist that the President and the Secretary of the Interior and those that have control of the situation do this in a very strategic, very targeted way because if these big rigs ever leave the gulf –there are only 33 of them– it’s not like you can make them every day or every year.  Some of them take years to build.  If they leave the gulf and go drill off coast of Africa, they’re not coming back anytime soon.” __ FOX

The Democrat Senator must be confused, because from March through May, her President and Federal Agencies said quite the opposite.  Details below the fold.

So today [March 31, 2010] we’re announcing the expansion of offshore oil and gas
exploration, but in ways that balance the need to harness domestic energy resources and the
need to protect America’s natural resources.  Under the leadership of Secretary Salazar,
we’ll employ new technologies that reduce the impact of oil exploration.  We’ll protect
areas that are vital to tourism, the environment, and our national security.  And we’ll be
guided not by political ideology, but by scientific evidence. __ President Obama, White House Press Release

Here’s the challenge that we have.  We don’t yet have the technological breakthroughs that
can completely replace fossil fuels.  So for the next 10 years, next 20 years, we’re still
going to be using oil; we’re still going to be using coal; we’re still going to be using
natural gas — we’re still going to be using the traditional sources to fuel our cars, to
heat our homes, to run our big power plants, et cetera.

I don’t agree with the notion that we shouldn’t do anything.  It turns out, by the way,
that oil rigs today generally don’t cause spills.  They are technologically very advanced.
Even during Katrina, the spills didn’t come from the oil rigs, they came from the
refineries onshore. [April 2, 2010] __ President Obama, White House Press Release

NEW ORLEANS [April 23, 2010] — Coast Guard officials say there is no oil currently leaking
from a drilling rig that exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico, leaving 11 workers
unaccounted for.

Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry said Friday morning that no oil appeared to be leaking
from the well head at the ocean floor 5,000 feet deep, nor was any oil leaking at the
water’s surface.  __ USA Today

Secretary Salazar … Ordered immediate inspections of all deepwater operations in the
Gulf of Mexico.  The inspections [May 11, 2010] of deepwater drilling rigs found Incidents
of Non-Compliance (INC) on two rigs.  Those violations were corrected and no other
violations were found. __ Deepwater Horizon Unified Command Press Release
