Americans at home and abroad at the mercy of indifferent and unaccountable Capitol City, with no Katniss in sight
[As this column was being prepared, we learned that its main subject was hospitalized for treatment of a blood clot resulting from a concussion she sustained earlier this month. We wish Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a full and quick recovery.]
Four dead in Benghazi after weeks of pleas for help. "Moderate" Syrian regime, deemed worthy of restored diplomatic relations, massacres innocents in the streets of Damascus. Re-set Russians aid and abet the (so far) conventional butchers of Damascus and the nuclear ambitions of the Islamist butchers of Tehran. And finally, Bill O'Reilly reports:
Jon Hammar saw combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, but his most brutal foreign experience was in Mexico. Last August, the 27-year-old former Marine corporal was incarcerated by Mexican authorities in Matamoros for trying to register an antique shotgun with customs agents. Foolishly, Cpl. Hammar followed instructions given to him by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Brownsville, Texas. He registered the gun with them and brought the paperwork to the Mexicans to get their stamp of approval in order to carry the gun through the country. Hammar and a friend were driving a Winnebago, hoping to have a nice surfing vacation with some hunting on the side.
Even though the Mexican authorities clearly saw that Hammar was trying to follow the rules, they seized the Winnebago and locked the corporal up in the notoriously corrupt CEDES prison anyway. There he was threatened by other inmates and told by guards that he could buy his way out of the hellhole by paying money to the "right people."
Hammar's parents, who live in South Florida, immediately contacted the State Department and were told to be patient. And so they were. Three months later, Hammar was still incarcerated and had not even seen a judge, and things were becoming increasingly desperate.
That's when his parents gave up on the State Department and contacted the media.
Reminds of how U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, hearing nothing from his boss Hillary in D.C., eventually gave up on more security in Libya's wild west. Yet, we are told that the former First Lady of White House Travel Office, Vince Foster, Rose Law Firm documents and Puerto Rican terrorist pardons, cover-ups fame, is made of Teflon; and well on her way to succeed President Barack Obama as the 45th President of the United States, after the Election of 2016.
The Apocalypse by Academia and the Press
Of course, if any Democrat serves an Obama third term it will mean that America has been fundamentally transformed; but is it too much to ask that a prominent Democrat ruling in our Capitol City (and not named Jimmy Carter) be held accountable? Apparently:
Washington can be a cruel and unforgiving place. Want a friend? Harry Truman once said. Get a dog. Or maybe he didn’t say it. But it’s a good point: In this town, nobody gets a free pass from the press, the pundits and the pols. Nobody, that is, until Hillary Clinton. At the end of her tenure as secretary of state, she alone has emerged virtually unscathed — the lone superstar of the president’s first term. A recent poll has her numbers well above the president’s and exceeded only by you guessed it — her husband, Bill. And those high favorability ratings have remained pretty consistent since 2008.
There’s no denying that Clinton has done a very good job as the nation’s top diplomat. But to read the media adulation, you’d think she was about to be admitted into the secretary of state Hall of Fame. Google Chairman Eric E. Schmidt introduced her last year as the “most significant secretary of state since Dean Acheson.” A New York Times profile earlier this year claimed her legacy was nothing less than the “remaking of American diplomacy in her own fashion.”
Unlike President Obama, she also appears to have racked up almost no deficits.
Yes, Washington can be cruel and unforgiving ... for Republicans. How this author deems Obama (given his re-election) or Bill (given his post-presidential popularity) to have not escaped scathing media scrutiny, we can't imagine, but I digress.
The fact is that the only accomplishments Hillary Clinton can cite to explain her popularity are marrying a successful politician; being seen as a cuckold victim of her spouse; and being a personal-space-invasion victim of Rick Lazio in debate.
Hillarycare failed. Then Senator Clinton (and then-Senator Obama) voted twice to de-fund American troops in the field against al Qaeda. Secretary of State Clinton hands are bloodied by her diplomatic friends from Damascus to Cairo to Benghazi. But John McCain still deems her his honorable friend.
Capitol City Hunger Games eat We the People alive
The Hunger Games trilogy penned by Suzanne Collins describes a post-apocalyptic America divided into 12 isolated work-prison districts brutally ruled by a totalitarian regime in Capitol City that force annual survivalist games upon them to remind them who is boss and that liberation is impossible.
Thankfully, our 50 states retain some autonomy over the size of gun magazines and Sunday alcohol sales, but not much else. The "apocalypse" that has rendered us economic slaves to Washington, D.C. has been the non-violence of liberals in academia and the press and the lemming-like voters they produced. But Liberty suffers grievously, nonetheless, even if we can still travel and our teenage children are not forced into arenas from which only one can emerge alive.
Hillary needs to be held accountable. Of course, so does her boss Obama all the more, but the voters refused. All we have left to be our Katniss Mockingjay Everdeen, for the next four years are Rush, Fox News and a Republican House. We saw the results of that trifecta defense on Election Day, but I digress.
Would it be too much to ask that more conservatives buy media, major in journalism, seek tenure at universities and show some indifference to being re-elected after tea parties? Again, consider O'Reilly:
When the story crossed my desk, I found it hard to believe. Cpl. Hammar had served his country honorably, returned to the USA with post-traumatic stress disorder, been treated for nine months in California and simply wanted a vacation after his ordeal. It was obvious that he was being held on bogus charges, and the State Department seemed impotent. When we asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for a comment, she refused to say anything about the case. A few of her deputies visited Hammar in prison, but the official line was that State could do nothing more.
Sen. Bill Nelson and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen raised some hell about the situation, but things continued to deteriorate. Mexican authorities actually chained Hammar to his bed. Another inmate sent a picture of that out to the press.
In mid-December, the Fox News White House correspondent asked press secretary Jay Carney about the case. President Barack Obama's spokesman looked perplexed and said he did not know anything about it. As unbelievable as that sounds, I believe that Carney was telling the truth. And by telling one truth, Carney indicated another truth: Neither Obama nor Secretary of State Clinton had come to the aid of an American combat veteran who was being abused by Mexican authorities.
Who are these people?
Who are these people that hold the nukes and exalted titles like Chief Executive, Commander-in-Chief or, dare I say, Leader of the (less) Free World or Smartest Woman in the World; only to use their power to give speeches about their fantasy, Utopian world view while Rome and America burn?
Edward Klein's The Truth About Hillary (2005) describes a woman unfamiliar with the truth, as revealed by close friends and colleagues that have been betrayed. The same can be gleaned about Barack Obama from his The Amateur (2012). They care not about We the People's desired Liberty and the pursuits of happiness we prefer. They know best, you see.
Conservatives will have to be the ones to hold the Ruling Class accountable, if they are to be held accountable. This conservative resolves to do so daily in 2013. Thanks to the efforts of Bill O'Reilly and his "The Factor" tv show, Corporal Jon Hammar was released in time for Christmas. He also writes in his Killing Lincoln (2011) book that President Lincoln set aside one day per week to answer letters from "the folks".
Have President Obama or Secretary of State Clinton set aside one day in the past four years to do as much? Not that I can tell.
