Colorado's John Salazar, a so-called "blue dog Democrat" continues to underwhelm and show a distinct LACK of leadership. Last Thursday, the House moved to adjourn and send everyone home to campaign in a last ditch effort to hold onto their seats. It was such a close vote that Speaker Nancy Pelosi had to cast the deciding vote for a final of 210-209. No-Show Salazar showed up just long enough to vote FOR adjournment and AGAINST extending the Bush tax cuts.
The DAY BEFORE he voted to adjourn, Salazar released a statement that said: "These tax cuts will help keep our economy moving forward and give families and small businesses the confidence and stability they need during a recovering economy....I want to extend tax cuts for one year. It will allow our economy to continue to recover and give Congress a clearer picture of our fiscal situation before Congress takes any more action."
On the 15th of September, he joined over 30 other so-called blue dogs and sent a letter to Speaker Pelosi asking for an extension BEFORE the House adjourned. "We believe in times of economic recovery it makes good sense to maintain things as they are," the letter said. "Providing this certainty will give small businesses, the backbone of our economic recovery, confidence and stability...We urge quick passage of legislation to extend the tax cuts...The sooner we act, the sooner our nation's economy will benefit. We look forward to working with you to extend all income tax rates."
Apparently his certainty that the cuts must be extended was not actually worth standing up for. Maybe he thought no one would notice, like when he voted yes on the Fannie and Freddie bailout, the auto bailout and the stimulus. Or when he voted for Obamacare. Or heaven forbid, when he voted for Nancy Pelosi.
And speaking of Nancy Pelosi, her little lap dog coalition just trots along behind her, voting however they get permission to vote. An article in this morning's Wall Street Journal points out that the Blue Dogs - a coalition formed after the 94 GOP take-over - only voted somewhat conservatively their very first year. After that, it was all downhill and now, according to the National Taxpayer's Union, their overall scores of around 10%-15% over the last three years are barely distinguishable from the average tax-and-spend Democrat.
Every year since 2007, the Democratic advantage in the House has been fewer than the number of seats held by Blue Dogs: If they had wanted to, the Blue Dogs could have made themselves masters of the House. They could have held an effective veto over any bill they pleased, insisting that Mrs. Pelosi, Majority Leader Harry Reid and even President Obama himself heed their call for fiscal responsibility. Instead, the Blue Dogs became Mrs. Pelosi's lap dogs
The article also points out that "The Blue Dog Coalition isn't a vehicle to help conservative Democrats influence policy. It is a marketing brand to help vulnerable Democrats deceive voters."
Salazar votes party-line a whopping 97% of the time. How is it possible that this guy keeps getting elected? If we want different results, we're gonna have to elect differently!
Small businessman Scott Tipton - endorsed by Sarah Palin, FreedomWorks and many others - has been campaigning hard in the very large 3rd Congressional district. He is finding that the national wave of fed-up, fired-up citizens is also sweeping through Western Colorado. This is a race that can be won. It must be won. It's time for liberty-loving patriots to step up and help send Salazar home with his tail between his legs.
