BIMBOS FOR DING DONGS or “Why the Hostess Worker is Good for Jobs…in Mexico”

The Rise of a Mexican Brand?

“BIMBO” is a respectable brand name in Mexico. The brand is owned by the wealthiest man in the world.

   No, not this guy.

 THIS GUY!

Mexican business mogul, Carlos  Slim, has the taste for savvy acquisitions of brands others destroy, proving that free markets work, capitalism is the answer, and shipping jobs overseas is hardly the workers fault, unless they are in league whole-heartily with inflexible ding dongs of the union and political variety.

While a purchase by Bimbo is still  rumor, Hostess the quintessential American brand, created four generations of fans by offering a wholesome lie that its Wonder bread could “build strong bodies in 12 ways.”

But we — who grew up with Leave it to Beaver — loved that lie along with the white filling in Twinkies a chemist friend of mine claims has a 500,000 year half life .

Brand Quick Facts

From CNN Money comes the following about the iconic US produced brand of baked goods:

Hostess had annual sales of about $2.5 billion. The company said it had been making 500 million Twinkies and 127 million loaves of Wonder Bread annually before Friday’s shutdown.

“Its bread brands, including Wonder Bread, Nature’s Pride and Butternut, make the company the No. 2 bread baker in the country, according to Symphony/IRI Group. Bimbo Bakeries, maker of the Arnold and Stroehmann brands, is the No. 1 bread baker.” — CNN Money

ROI

Predicting to Facebook friends that an investment in purchasing Twinkies and Ding Dongs would make up to 500% ROI overnight, I went into the local Hostess day-old retail store on Friday to find the shelves empty.

Too late as usual, it was one of those Zingers, about the return on investment I seem to predict but never seem able to capitalize upon in time.

Today comes a new twist which may just be as valuable as donut holes — a saving grace for those of us who missed our chance to invest Friday.

A judge — no doubt a Ho Ho fan — said today “Not so quick,” ordering Hostess to mediate with the union.

It’s all probably Bush’s fault, but we shall soon see where our Sno Balls will come from in coming months.

C’est l vie, or should I say, “Asi es la vida!
