The Invisible Man
On January 20, 2009, Barack Hussein Obama became the 44th President of the United States after running on a campaign platform of hope and change. He also pledged to fundamentally return America to her course of greatness. Eight years after 911, six years into the Iraq war, and only a year into the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, Americans came out in droves to see the man they hoped would return to them the dream of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Unfortunately, not long after his inauguration, Mr. Obama began showing signs that he was simply not up for the task of being President, which did not go unnoticed by the American people and by foreign heads-of-state. To further complicate matters, as Mr. Obama progressed into his presidency, he proved that he was more of a Chicago-style “skilled divider” rather than a national unifier of people, a man inept at solving problems and dealing with crises, a man of questionable integrity who blamed others for his failures, and a man who believed that debate equals action. Today, the question as to who is running this country is up in the air. Increasingly fixated on conducting fundraisers and giving speeches to blame Congress and Supreme Court decisions, Mr. Obama has become “The Invisible Man” who fails to show up and lead the nation. In a previous article titled, “A Call For Leadership,” I wrote, “It is time that we elect proven leaders who can get the job done and whose moral compasses are true. The American people are tired of being lied to and billed for politicians’ financial management failures.” Disillusioned and hoodwinked, the American people are desperate for someone to surface who exemplifies true leadership. As we low crawl toward the 2016 election cycle, self-enamored rock stars and invisible men/women need not apply. We’re “holding out for a hero” and some miracles.
When Mr. Obama assumed the role as the nation’s chief executive, the country was in bad shape economically and the American people were hurting. There is plenty of blame to go around, and former President George W. Bush should take responsibility for the economic downturn because it transpired on his watch. However, I believe that a sitting President can only blame his predecessor so long. There should be a statute of limitations on placing such blame unless you are a disciple of Saul Alinsky. In that case, no such prohibition exists, because such action supports Alinsky’s tactical rule number thirteen: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it, which essentially states that blame is forever; never accept responsibility (See Alinsky, Saul D., Rules for Radicals: A Practical Primer for Realistic Radicals, Random House (1971)). Based on my aforementioned premise, it is reasonable to expect that the President would have assumed total responsibility for the nation’s economic wellbeing and direction by the time he was about halfway through his first term. That said, it troubles me that he has never taken responsibility for the failure of his economic policies that further hurt this nation, American businesses, and the American people. When Mr. Obama promised to bring transparency to Washington, he was actually saying that he would become “The Invisible Man” who cannot be held responsible for anything.
Politicians past and present are known for promising large packages to the American people and delivering little or nothing at all. When then-Senator Obama became Candidate Obama seeking election as the 44th President, large crowds came out to see the man who promised hope and change, and about whom they knew little. The degree of media coverage was unprecedented. It seemed as if something special was happening, and the American people rushed to embrace it. After all, who wouldn’t want to be part of history in the making? Fast forward six years into President Obama’s second term. The talk on the street has changed. Today, Americans hope they can put food on their tables, they hope that taxes will not continue to rise, they hope that they and their offspring will not be saddled with the burden of what is now over $18 trillion in debt, they hope that they will not be targeted by the Internal Revenue Service and the National Security Agency, they hope that they will not be forced to buy a product by the government, and they hope that what they work for will not be redistributed to those who choose not to work and those who enter this country illegally. Since 2007, the average American household has seen its net worth shrink by forty percent, causing record numbers of people to become dependent on government-issued food stamps to in order to exist. Once-proud working class families have now been relegated to government dependency, joblessness, and despair. In a show of defiance and in his refusal to accept responsibility, Mr. Obama continues to be the “The Invisible Man” by blaming Congress and utilizing his Alinsky toolbox. I believe that if we can get to 2016 without economic collapse, history will not be so kind to “The Invisible Man” who promised hope and change.
The road to America’s decline began with the stripping of our military’s dignity and character. Since its inception, America’s military has always given 100% toward completion of a mission no matter who sat in the Oval Office at the time. However, President Obama has never adjusted to his role as commander-in-chief. Part of that can be explained by his lack of military service. He loathes the warrior class and its principles, which in turn accounts for his awkward interactions with military personnel. It must have given him great joy to strike at the heart of military discipline by lifting the ban on gays and lesbians serving, while simultaneously forcing the military to accept same sex marriage. His administration failed to negotiate a status of forces agreement in Iraq, causing a complete withdrawal of U.S. military forces, thus creating a vacuum now filled by terrorist forces called the Islamic State of Iraq/Syria and Iraq’s terrorist state, Iran. It is possible to see a mirror image effect occurring in Afghanistan as 2014 winds down. I believe all of this was by design, not by mistake, and carefully orchestrated. If you look at today’s American military, it is a broken force that is now more concerned about sexual assault convictions than it is about tactics, techniques, and procedures in a designated skill craft. Finally, as a means of taking away the American military expeditionary capabilities and hobbling the force, a major drawdown is now underway as we engage our enemies on the battlefield in Afghanistan, a conscious effort that will gut the force of its warrior combat fighting power. Sadly, only “we the people” can defeat terrorism and yet it is the very people tasked to carry out that mission that we cut first. God help us.
The combination of Chicago-style politics and Alinsky tactics have paralyzed this nation and created an ineffective non-functioning government. America is now living the perfect storm. One of the tactics discussed in Alinsky’s book, “Rules for Radicals”, is to never let a good crisis go to waste. Today, we are a world and a nation embroiled in crises that are being cooked to the point that they boil over into other nations, causing chaos and conflict there. Everywhere you look, conflict exists and it is spreading like wildfire. For example, here at home, we give illegals access to healthcare while our veterans are being left to languish and die, we have trillions of dollars being misused, misspent and mismanaged, we have government agencies targeting American citizens, we have a justice system that selectively chooses which laws it wants to enforce, releasing thousands of convicted violent felons back into communities, and we have thousands of illegals to streaming across our unsecured southern borders, all while the President tells the American people that not a “smidgen” of corruption exists, and then having given his interview or speech, he pivots off to a fundraising event or a golf outing. It is almost as if he flips a switch and becomes willfully blind to the plight of the American people. Abroad, the darkness continues to spread. The Middle East is exploding in conflict. The terrorist group ISIS has established a caliphate state, and religious persecution and destruction of religious sites abound. Russia has annexed Crimea by force. Russia has continued to threaten the state of Ukraine, and Russia is most likely responsible for shooting down flight MH-17 with a surface-to-air missile, killing almost three hundred civilians. I believe that Mr. Obama is bored with foreign affairs. Those crises do not afford him any ideological advantage. His true love is social justice, which is why he is inclined to take executive action here at home, forcing his policies on the American people before he leaves office. It is said that true leaders go toward the sound of the guns, lead during crises, and solve problems. History will show that this President failed to solve problems, avoided things that were hard, and failed to show up when needed. His attempts to render himself invisible during times of crisis are becoming obvious to the American people and the media. The real question is, what are we going to do about it?
The American people elected Mr. Obama based upon hope and his promise of change. I believe Mr. Obama seized upon that hope to rise from being a Senator with little to no experience to being the most powerful man in the free world. For the first time in the history of this great nation, people voted for a man based upon what they “hoped” he would do. Some voted to assuage their collective guilt over racial oppression. In a way, it was a means to take mindless, overt racism, transcend it, and consign it to the past where it belonged. Unfortunately, today we are more divided than ever. The use of race, gender, sexual orientation, and religious warfare is alive and well. This administration does not hesitate to use any one of those topics to create fear among those who disagree with White House policies and positions. Like a basketball coach who directs his players from the sidelines, but never touches the ball, Mr. Obama has remained silent and invisible to the very people he professed to represent when he first spoke as President-Elect Obama in Chicago six years ago, saying that he would be “your President too.” Although he may believe that ignoring the voices of the American people will allow him to maintain his invisibility, he is crippling his own political party in the upcoming 2014 mid-terms. I guess hypocrisy knows no bounds.
Today, America is nothing more than a boat at sea without a motor. It is the product of electing someone to the nation’s highest office based upon guilt, the idea that being “cool and hip” gets things done, and that government is the answer to people’s problems. Call it the effects of climate change [pun] if you like, but the sharks are circling in the water and terrorists are coming by air and on land. They smell our blood. No scare tactics here. That’s a reality, and “The Invisible Man” will not save you. So much for hope and change!
