Obama’s Legacy – One Thing

How ObamaCare Will Become The Big Lie In American History

In the 1991 film “City Slickers,” hard-as-nails trail boss Curly Washburn (Jack Palance)  shared with rookie cowpoke Mitch Robbins (Billy Crystal) that a person’s life comes down to just “one thing.”  For those who seek the limelight and benefits of elected public service, one thing is all that many will be known for – good or bad.  George Washington, who certainly accomplished a lot in his life, is best known as the first President and the Father Of Our Country.  Abraham Lincoln is most famous for abolishing slavery.  Theodore Roosevelt, who worked to protect open space and create national parks, is best known for leading the Rough Riders (1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment) in the bloody assault up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War.  Richard Nixon, who began the final withdrawal of U.S. forces from Viet Nam, will go down in history as the President who participated in a political cover-up and resigned rather than dragging the country through his impeachment.  Though these and other political leaders had their hands in many things, eventually their legacy came down to just one thing.

The same could be said for our current President.  When faced with an opportunity afforded few Presidents – control of the White House, Senate and House of Representatives all at one time – Barack Obama took stock of his dozens of campaign promises and pursued just one thing:  nationalization of healthcare.  Obama knew that healthcare needed to be the first domino to fall in his efforts to eventually win control of every major industry and every citizen’s private life.  As illustrated in Ayn Rand’s novel “Atlas Shrugged,” once legislative bodies pass laws that give regulatory agencies broad authority to basically do whatever they want, the rule of law ceases to exist.  The President that controls those agencies is now free to implement any policies he wishes and call them lawful.  But back to healthcare…

Just about every promise Barack Obama made regarding his healthcare initiative has turned out to be a lie.  Failures with the federal healthcare web site were not a lie, they were the result of incompetence.  But the lies, now well known and documented, were a classic “bait and switch.”  The healthcare law – drafted under Obama’s direction – included provisions that specifically contradicted both his campaign promises and the representations he made after his election to generate support for it among Democrats and independents.  Democrat leaders in the House and Senate, knowing that a careful reading of the bill would reveal these lies, made such deceiving statements as “we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy” (Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, 2010).  Pelosi was careful not to purger herself in the court of public opinion (though she would do so later on several occasions), but she abetted Obama’s deceit by urging passage of the bill before the lies could be revealed.  An army of political hacks, corporate donors and deceived citizens gave Obama the cover he needed to pass a law that was not what he promised and that he knew America would not support if the people knew the truth.

ObamaCare has turned into a national disaster.  Although still early in the sign-up process, the ratio of people who have lost their healthcare policies compared to those who have signed up is 40:1.  Fewer people have health insurance today than before the law was passed.  Premiums and deductibles have skyrocketed for many, not gone down.  Expert analysts predict massive cost overruns, not due to healthcare delivery costs, but due to administrative overhead costs that have very little to do with healthcare.  As predicted by Ayn Rand, Congress has relinquished so much authority to the President through the ObamaCare law that the floodgates are thrown wide open for corruption, tyranny and oppression – both within the healthcare industry and in many other areas of government that affect the every day lives of all Americans.

The lie is out – so what’s next?  Mid-term elections are a year away and for Democrats there’s “alot of ‘splainin’  to do.”  History allows a President only one legacy, “one thing.”  Will that thing be a healthcare system that delivers on the President’s promises and betters the lives of all Americans?  Or will Obama be remembered for his lack of character and lies?  My bet is on the latter.
