This is in response to John Hawkins’ “7 Reasons Why Marriage is Falling Apart in America”.
You totally missed the boat on the root cause as to why marriage is falling apart. In the last fifty years we have transitioned from a Christian to a completely secular culture. The laws, like no-fault divorce, and our sexual mores (acceptance of living together, illegitimacy, absentee fathers, homosexuality, etc.) have simply reflected our change in worldview.
We had “fault” divorce because Christ had said there was only one legitimate reason for divorce and that was adultery. Matthew 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
We once believed in chastity because the Bible taught neither the fornicator, nor adulterer, nor homosexual would see heaven. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
We didn’t have a lavish welfare system, which makes widespread illegitimacy possible, because the Christian culture believed that not working was immoral. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
So, you have highlighted some of the consequences of moving from a Christian to a secular culture, but you never really got to the root cause of the problem.
