Would American intelligence analysts cover for Iran?

I think everyone recalls the rather shocking 2007 NIE estimate that claimed that Iran was not developing a nuclear weapon. If you don’t remember then here’s a quick look at event via a laughable MSM story written by David Ignatius of The Washington Post. Link to his entire story here.

The debate about what the NIE should mean for U.S. policy toward Iran is just beginning. But for the intelligence community, this rebuttal of conventional wisdom will restore some integrity after the Iraq WMD debacle.

In challenging the previous certitudes about Iran and the Bomb, the NIE recalls the admonition many decades ago by the godfather of CIA analysts, Sherman Kent: “When the evidence seems to force a single and immediate conclusion, then that is the time to worry about one’s bigotry, and to do a little conscientious introspection.”

I think the word “integrity” was used a bit loosely in his column.  Now all of sudden we have this story from Gregg Miller of the L.A. Times:

Reporting from Washington — Little more than a year after U.S. spy agencies concluded that Iran had halted work on a nuclear weapon, the Obama administration has made it clear that it believes there is no question that Tehran is seeking the bomb.

In his news conference this week, President Obama went so far as to describe Iran’s “development of a nuclear weapon” before correcting himself to refer to its “pursuit” of weapons capability.

Obama’s nominee to serve as CIA director, Leon E. Panetta, left little doubt about his view last week when he testified on Capitol Hill. “From all the information I’ve seen,” Panetta said, “I think there is no question that they are seeking that capability.”

So what happened?  Did our intelligence community just vote for Iran’s nuclear bomb making after they voted against the idea?

I think what we are seeing here are some facts regarding the real world squeezing through the now fifty year old civil war within our state department and intelligence community.  I’ll write more on that later but for now the moonbats will just need to go back to hating the CIA.
