I had an epiphany today. You know, when you have one of those thoughts like “it’s just so obvious, how did I miss it!”
Forgive me if I’m saying something so obvious that you just say “duh, of course!” but I have to say this.
The Left is defining everything in opposition to God, but using God’s own Word to do it.
This reminds me of the joke where a scientist tells God that he is able to make life using only dirt and challenges God to a contest. God responds to the challenge, and the scientist and God meet. God takes a handful of dirt and forms a man. The scientist grabs a handful of dirt, and God says “uh-uh, no, go make your own dirt!”
A basic tenet of Christianity is found in John 1:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
There’s no getting around this verse, either you believe it or you don’t. If you don’t believe it, then put your Bible down, and go watch Desperate Housewives or something, because reading that book is clearly a waste of your time.
But the Left does not do that.
They pour over the Bible like W.C Fields who allegedly was reading it on his deathbed, and when questioned said he was “looking for loopholes.”
Except they don’t believe the book to begin with, and they are simply trying to use it against those who do.
This is not a new thing.
In Matthew chapter 4, and Mark chapter 1, Satan tempted Jesus by quoting Scripture. Kind of a dumb thing to do, since Jesus is God and the physical embodiment of the Scriptures. However Satan had to try; he knew Jesus came to earth as a baby in a man’s body, and “he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself” (from Philippians 2).
If Satan could just get Jesus to take up a little bit of pride, to redefine the Word of God one little bit, then he would have won. But he didn’t.
If you believe ANY of Christianity, you have to believe that Jesus is God. I’m not going to argue about the theological nature of His divinity—whole denominations have split and centuries of argument have been made about this. I would say, however, that whatever you believe about Jesus, if you don’t believe He is God, then you might have trouble calling yourself a Christian and making other Christians believe it.
And this is the point.
The Left wants to define what a Christian is.
They want to define what verses are useful, and what verses are not in the Bible, for whatever purpose they support.
In reality, they don’t believe the Bible, nor do they accept its authority, or the authority of God.
I once had a discussion with a self-described Christian who is openly gay and openly non-celibate. My position involved the many Bible verses that call homosexual behavior sin, and clearly tell what the results of that path will be. His position was that those verses don’t apply, the same thing I always hear, that Jesus Himself never spoke specifically of homosexual behavior, among other things.
My response was to quote 2 Peter 1.
We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
For this, I was called a hateful bigot, and there the chat ended.
But this is the central point.
The Bible is either reliable, as a whole, or it isn’t. Either no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation, or everything is open to everyone’s interpretation.
This country was founded on the principle that the government of men makes a poor church, and the church makes a poor government of men. The First Amendment is the bulwark against the government attempting to define religious doctrine.
But the Left, using the same old tired method as Satan did two centuries ago, is trying to get us to believe that we can redefine God, and His Word, to whatever purpose they choose.
They do this knowingly, deceptively, and in opposition to God and all He represents.
The answer is the same as Jesus gave: “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”
The Constitution gives us the right to say that. And the government cannot compel us to say otherwise.
The Left can continue to make arguments about how to define sin, marriage, gender, and morality. But I’ve got a word for the Left, stop wasting my time and other Christians’ time: stop using the Bible to make your point.
If you want to make man in your own image, get your own dirt!
