Evangelical voters may cause the defeat of McCain
Evangelical Leaders have started a religious Political War with Mormons. With all the attacks on Romney because of his Religion, one wonders how many Mormons will support McCain if he bows to this presure. And at this point, any other VP Choice other than Romney will be seen as bowing to the Evangelical Presure.
Prominent evangelical leaders are warning Sen. John McCain against picking former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as his running mate, saying their troops will abandon the Republican ticket on Election Day if that happens. They say Mr. Romney lacks trust on ….. and because he is a Mormon. Opposition is particularly powerful among those who supported former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in the Republican presidential primaries earlier this year
Unlike Evenagelical, Mormon leaders are prohibited from getting involved in politics as a representive of the church, so its hard to tell how many Mormon’s will feel slighted and therefore will not Support McCain if he doesn’t select Romney as his running Mate. However, if I had to guess, I would say as much as 50% if not more Mormans may not vote for McCain if Romney is not the VP pick.
In particular, Pawlenty is seen as the Evenagelical Selection, and it questionable if Mormon’s will be willing to vote for McCain if Pawlenty is selected considering his poor history on Conservative positions.
Pawlenty is a born-again Christian and could be the one guy who helps (in part) to motivate Evangelicals to the ballot box
A number of prominent evangelical leaders are warning that if presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain selects Mitt Romney as his running mate, their followers will abandon the GOP in November.
They are wary of the former Massachusetts governor is part because he is a Mormon ….
We aren t against Mormonism, but Romney is not a thorough going evangelical and his flip-flopping on issues is understandable in a liberal state like Massachusetts, but our people won t understand that, said evangelical novelist Tim LaHaye.
Choosing Romney will alienate the entire evangelical community …. Rev. Rob McCoy, pastor of Calvary Chapel in Thousand Oaks, Calif., … I will vote for McCain unless he does one thing, he added. If he puts Romney on the ticket as veep.
Evangelical voters favored Mike Huckabee, an ordained Baptist minister, in the GOP nomination contest earlier this year, and many of his supporters do not regard Mormonism as a Christian denomination.
In fact, a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press last year found that 45 percent of white evangelicals do not believe Mormons are Christians, and 39 percent said they have an unfavorable view of Mormons.
One evangelical leader confided to The Times that selecting Romney as a running mate would likely cost McCain up to 10 percent of the evangelical vote enough to spell defeat for McCain in a close race against Democrat Barack Obama.http://newsmax.com/insidecover/EvangelicalsWaryof_Romn/2008/07/29/117342.html
The evangelical leaders should ask themselves, are they willing to risk the support of Mormon’s and put Obama in office. While there are certainly more Evangelical than Mormon’s, there are more Mormon’s in key battleground states than there are Evangelical’s.RedState Gathering All-Access Passes Have SOLD OUT.Register here for the Thu/Sat night Party Pass!
