The American government was founded to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people. Our elected officials work for us. They are our public servants. But way too often, they conveniently forget this important fact.
The recent uprisings at the healthcare town hall meetings demonstrate what I'm writing about. Our career politicians of the democratic ilk are being completely disrespectful towards these concerned (and rightfully so) citizens. These are average people who are just trying to hold their elected representatives responsible for what is happening in Washington D.C.
The Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, claims that they are just republican "plants" whose sole purpose is to disrupt these meetings. Obviously, Mr. Reid has not been paying attention to the responses these republican operatives are getting from the others in attendance. I guess that he must believe that all of the attendees are conservative "moles."
Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, has referred to our fellow citizens as being swastika carrying nazis. She has also called them un-American. These titles are demeaning and degrading. If you do not feel outrage towards the Queen of San Francisco, you should.
White House officials deny that this is a genuine grassroots movement. These "brainiacs" have used the term "astroturf" to describe what is happening. Senator McCain must be scratching his head raw as he ponders how he lost to these amateurs. Before it is all said and done, it will be difficult to find anyone who will admit that they voted for this administration.
The democratic party is headed down the road of defeat in the 2010 mid-term elections, because a lot of the voting public will not tolerate the disrespect and abuse being dished out by the left-wingers. However, there are several radical leftists who will not be gone anytime soon. This list includes the following senators: Richard Durbin, Charles Schumer, Barbara Boxer, John Kerry, Carl Levin and Patrick Leahy among others. It also includes the following representatives: Nancy Pelosi, Henry Waxman, Barney Frank, Ed Markey, Maxine Waters, Steny Hoyer, John Conyers and Dennis Kucinich.
These officials hail from uber-liberal states and districts that will continue to vote them into office no matter how incompetent or radical they may be. And the rest of us have to suffer because of the offbeat agenda that they manage to sneak through from time to time. They would completely ruin our country if the rest of us would allow it.
Congressional term limits would be a great tool in helping the citizenry to keep Washington in check and under control. Representatives should be limited to four terms, and senators should be limited to two. It would require a lot of pressure from the people to make it happen but it is doable. Our constitution was amended to place term limits on the offices of the president and vice-president. It could be done again.
After spending time in Washington, our congressional leaders seem to forget that they're the peoples' representatives in the federal government. They become professional politicians. Their priorities get skewed. Their first priority becomes themselves. They worry more about their electability. This is why they get involved in wasteful "pork barrel" spending, and it also explains why they become toadies for special interests groups. Their second priority is their political party. Most will disregard the best interests of the nation to toe their party's ideological line.
The will of the majority of the people and our national well being gets lost in the shuffle. The town hall protests against Obamacare, and the democratic party response to them demonstrates my point. It's true that some good solid conservatives would also get swept out by these limits but it's a price worth paying for the health of our nation.
