Republicans can threaten to use the same powers if they take back the Senate. However, that will not have much effect because Obama is President and can block anything they might do, and also because eliminating the filibuster is a left-wing goal as it enables more power grabs by the government. It is tempting to say it makes it easier to pass conservative reforms, but long-term it is helpful for the left.
Instead, McConnell and company should introduce a rules change that any Senator who votes to eliminate the filibuster will not be allowed to speak on the Senate floor or serve on any committees. This allows Republicans to keep the filibuster, while also offering real punishment to those would eliminate it.
