McCain snaps up rejected National Anthem singer.

Because when they throw a pitch like that...

…right over the plate, low, and slow; you swing for the bleachers.

Zach Bencal has become something of a celebrity after his scheduled singing of the national anthem at Sen. Barack Obama’s New Hampshire rally last week was canceled at the last minute.

[snip]

Bencal will be back in the spotlight tomorrow — he has accepted Sen. John McCain’s campaign’s offer to sing the anthem at the Republican’s campaign event at St. Anselm’s College in Manchester.

Bencal said the Obama campaign called him the night before he was to sing and said his services would not be needed, because an additional speaker had been booked.

The Obama campaign called this a “miscommunication,” which is short for “our ground-level staffers still don’t quite get that some things aren’t optional, particularly outside of an urban environment.” And far be it from me to not quote Jeff Grappone of the McCain campaign putting the knife in:

“Standard operating procedure for Barack Obama: politics first, country second. John McCain knows firsthand the sacrifices that have been made in defense of our nation. He always honors America with pride, paying tribute to the sacrifices of the men and women who have fought for our freedom,” Grappone said.

Not the most earth-shaking story in the world, but suggestive of campaign styles, n’est-ce pas?

PS: Notice, by the way, that we’re still actively campaigning in this state: McCain’s going to be personally attending this rally. Every EV counts.
