Straight from the Horse’s Mouth

Mr. Ed's Musings, Vol. III

More random thoughts from an often warped mind…

  • My new favorite television program: “Beyond the Politics,” hosted by Bill Bennett on CNN (that’s right…CNN). I just finished watching the premier episode. A roundtable of intelligent people having a reasonable and rational discussion about deep and important issues facing our country. Good job, Bill. I hope this is a harbinger of things to come.

  • My new favorite author: C.S. Lewis, who I am reading for the first time. From “Mere Christianity”: “When a man is getting better he understands more and more clearly the evil that is still left in him. When a man is getting worse, he understands his own badness less and less. A moderately bad man knows he is not very good; a thoroughly bad man thinks he is all right…Good people know about both good and evil; bad people do not know about either.

  • My new favorite restaurant: Garden Cafe on Colonial Street near downtown Orlando. Try the Orange Beef.

  • A friend of mine said he was thinking about voting for Obama because it would represent a new day in race politics, i.e. the devaluation of the militant brand espoused by Rev. Jesse Jackson and his cohorts. My friend indicated an Obama presidency would enable us to declare dead the “age of racism” in the U.S. I disagree. If a man is elected president primarily or substantially due to his race, we have not moved beyond racism; in fact, we may be moving deeper into a racist culture. When we elect a president primarily for his views and ideas, without regard to his race, we will be closer to a racist-free culture. Even moreso, when a minority presidential candidate LOSES an election due to his views and ideas — and not because of his race — we will be closer still.

  • Pundit cliche alert: “What it all boils down to….” If you think about it, “what it all boils down to”….is….an empty pot.

  • Joe Biden has declared that higher income Americans need to do the “patriotic” thing and pay more taxes than they currently do. This implies that cutting taxes for the middle class is “unpatriotic,” doesn’t it?

  • I bought a windbreaker the other day but it doesn’t seem to be helping. I guess I’ll have to stick to Beano.

  • Liberals and the mainstream media are referring to American “torture” of terrorists as if it has, in fact, occurred. Correct me if I’m wrong, but has the Bush Administration ever actually admitted to conducting “torture”? I know they have stated they will not discuss what interrogation techniques they have or will use, which has caused many to leap to the conclusion that torture was conducted on one or more terrorists. By admitting or even denying the use of a specific interrogation technique, we telegraph to our enemies how to prepare in case of capture. President Bush seems to be holding the strategic advantage here but is losing the public relations battle. That is courageous leadership.
