This Just Might Anger the Anti-War American Left…
?if they were actually intellectually honest and not just anti-Bush
Recently (and probably here on REDSTATE) someone explained how easy it is to throw Hail Mary’s on every play when you know the fix is in for your side. That, and the total lack of any compulsion to be intellectually consistent on anything, is the only way I can rationalize how a presidential candidate for a “serious” American political party can be this diplomatically careless while spitting in the face of a large, motivated portion of his electoral base (from CNN transcript):
QUESTION: Should the United States respect Pakistani sovereignty and not pursue al Qaeda terrorists who maintain bases there, or should we ignore their borders and pursue our enemies like we did in Cambodia during the Vietnam War?
Part of the original answer:
OBAMA: …And if we have Osama bin Laden in our sights and the Pakistani government is unable or unwilling to take them out, then I think that we have to act and we will take them out. We will kill bin Laden; we will crush Al Qaeda. That has to be our biggest national security priority.
…and even clarified for us:
OBAMA: if Pakistan is unable or unwilling to hunt down bin Laden and take him out, then we should.
Now, that I think has to be our policy, because they are threatening to kill more Americans.
This just opens so many questions for the good Senator…
Would that be considered an illegal war? Would you get congress to pass and then sign legislation stating that to be “American Policy” with regards to Pakistan? Would you get congress to pass a war resolution giving you explicit power to do this? Would you seek up to 18 UN resolutions on the matter before you act? Would you do this unilaterally…even if several allies are going along with you?
What if bin Laden escapes to Iran? Since I seriously doubt they will be willing to hunt down one of their guests, does the same policy apply to there? Since “threatening to kill more Americans” seems to be a trigger on this policy, will this stated policy regarding sovereign borders also apply with Iran with regards to their ongoing actions in Iraq?
What if bin Laden escapes to Egypt? Since I seriously doubt they will be willing to hunt down one of their guests, does the same policy apply to there?
I could go on but (hopefully) you get the point…
