Tax Time? Call A Plumber

Matthew Bigg over at Reuters tells us that part of the reason Timothy Geithner’s tax problems will cause barely a ripple of dissent as he cruises towards nomination is that he is relatively unknown. (Read Article)

Tell that to Joe The Plumber. (“The” is his middle name, right?) Joe was more than relatively unknown when the press feeding frenzy instigated by his questioning of Barack Obama discovered his tax debt.

While Joe was excoriated in the press for his $1,200 tax lien, Geithner, the man who wants to head the Treasury Department – the department that oversees the IRS – is getting the kid glove treatment over a tax debt of $25,000 to $48,000 (depending on the source; there seems to be some confusion).

For the press to say that Geithner is unknown is laughable – since the reason the he and his tax troubles are unknown is because the press isn’t covering it. That circular reasoning is making me dizzy!

I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather have a plumber who has problems figuring out how much tax he owes than have the Secretary of the Treasury be incapable of determining his tax obligation. Honestly, that doesn’t give me any confidence that he can perform competently in that position. Various Obama apologists have tried to excuse his failure by calling it an honest mistake and pointing out how confusing the tax code is.

Whatever. Geithner wants to be confirmed as the Secretary of the Treasury. I believe the bar should be set higher for him than for my plumber.
