With Republicans Like This, Who Needs Democrats?

URGENT UPDATE: HB 1588 has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, and a public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday February 13 at 8:00AM.  It’s important for Constitution loving Washington patriots to flood this hearing to show their opposition to this unlawful usurpation of our Constitutional right to bear arms!  Who knows, you may given get a chance to testify.  If you do testify, please be respectful, yes even to Rep. Hope.  Be respectful, be honest and be courageous.

Original Post:
Washington State “Republican” Representative Mike Hope has signed on as a primary sponsor of a gun control bill in the Washington State Legislature.  Shocked? So was I.  At first I didn’t believe it, so I went to the Washington State Legislature’s website and looked at the bill, and there it was, plain as day under the list of primary sponsors, Representative Mike Hope.

This bill, HB 1588, makes it illegal for a private citizen to sell a legal firearm.  Well, illegal unless you get permission from the local police department or county sheriff.  The private seller, under this bill, would have to collect personal data from the private citizen wishing to by the firearm, fill out an application at the police station or sheriff’s office, pay a $20 “fee” (read: TAX) and wait for approval.

As if this wasn’t bad enough, they made sure that citizens would be punished if they fail to comply.  If a private citizen wishing to sell a firearm doesn’t follow this procedure, they’ll be found guilty of a gross misdemeanor which is punishable by 364 days in jail, a $5,000 fine, or both.

When asked on Facebook about his support for this bill, Rep. Hope said the following:

“This bill will not hinder people’s rights as law abiding citizens will still be able [sic] to purchase guns and won’t he [sic] prohibited (NRA lie). In fact, the background check actually costs less by 20-30 bucks (NRA lies about claiming a tax) and we can exempt LEO, CCW, WAC as they already had backgrounds [sic] completed making it even easier for a law abiding citizen to purchase a gun.

What this bill stops is the free ride felons get to purchase guns. It’s that simple. Anything we can do to assist I am in favor of and this bill doesn’t establish a list (NRA Lie) as it is already illegal in WA state to do so.

This doesn’t impact law abiding citizens only felons.
That is what this is about. Again, I don’t support allowing felons to purchase guns and this will help [sic]. “

Wait…  Isn’t it already illegal for a felon to buy a firearm?  Well, you see, felons won’t follow that law, so statists have to attack us, the law abiding private citizens.  When confronted with this line of reasoning, Rep. Hope responded “… be reasonable and responsible and support it as it won’t impact you… “  ”Be reasonable,” he says. Sure this bill is unconstitutional, but if you’re not violating the law, you have nothing to worry about, right?

Rep. Hope even resorted to personal and baseless attacks against a former (and hopefully, future) Republican Candidate for State Representative, Sam Wilson, saying “Keep supporting arming felons Sam and Lets [sic] see what your numbers look like next election! Use some common sense and stand up for what’s right! I again [sic] don’t support arming felons.”  Aha!  You see, failure to sell out the Constitution is, in fact, supporting felons, and by extension, their felonious activities.

All that conservatives want and expect from our elected Representatives is to stand on Republican principles, but even that is too much to ask, it seems. Rep. Hope took an oath to uphold the Constitution, not sell it out. Perhaps he needs some reminding of that fact.

If you live in Washington State, particularly if you live in Snohomish County and the 44th Legislative District, please call him and demand that he honor his oath of office.  If you’re a donor to the Republican Party at a national, state or county level, make sure that your donations only go to folks who understand the Constitution and who will take their oath of office seriously.  If you’re an elected Republican like this, be advised, election season is just around the corner, and we conservatives are watching you.
