Of Socialism and Sedatives (Bedtime for Democracy)

In 1986, with an assist from the Alternative Tentacles record company, The Dead Kennedys released the album Bedtime For Democracy. On this album, Jello Biafra penned the protest ballad “Chicken—- Conformist” to protest the mindlessness he saw around him in the Punk Rock Movement. I doubt Biafra truly intended the song to deliver an overdetermining critique of the current social milieu.

However, given the sycophancy of the modern media towards the Obama White House, I see no other way to look at it. Jello Biafra predicted the prevalent fail mode in Democracy’s social engineering. Once dissent becomes beyond uncool and more dated than yesterday, your compliance will be assumed. Like the vote count in the recent Honduran Referendum, your opinion becomes a non-sequitor.

This becomes increasingly evident as President Barack Obama fielded questions regarding his health plan. (HT: Wizbang!)

Question: “Outside the medical criteria for prolonging the life of someone who is elderly, is there any consideration that can be given for a certain spirit, a certain joy of living, or quality of life; or is it just a medical cut off at a certain age?”

President Obama: “Yeah, we’re not gonna solve every difficult problem in terms of end of life care. A lot of that is going to have to be we as a culture and a society making better decisions within our own families and for ourselves. But what we can do is make sure that at least some of the waste that exists in the system that is not making anybody’s mom better that is loading up on additional tests or additional drugs that the evidence shows is not going to improve care, that at least we can let doctors know and your mom know that, you know what, maybe this isn’t gonna help. Maybe you’re better off not taking the surgery, but taking the painkiller.”

Apparently, we’re all better off just taking a sedative. On the signature issue of Health Care “Reform,” he would certainly prefer a soporific audience to the one he’s forced to react to now. His allies seem to get pushback every time they blog forth and shill. QandO Blog describes what sorts of things the public learns when they push back and demand answers.

Obama hosted a conference call with leftist bloggers urging them to pressure Congress to pass his health plan as soon as possible. During the call, a blogger from Maine said he kept running into an Investors Business Daily article that claimed Section 102 of the House health legislation would outlaw private insurance. He asked: “Is this true? Will people be able to keep their insurance and will insurers be able to write new policies even though H.R. 3200 is passed?” President Obama replied: “You know, I have to say that I am not familiar with the provision you are talking about.”

The blogger referred to this provision on page 16 of the signature, landmark reform measure that President Barack Obama supports to the hilt; but can’t be bothered with reading. The legalese reads as follows.

“Except as provided in this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the first effective date of coverage is on or after the first day” of the year the legislation becomes law.

According to Dave Camp (R-MI), this means that the bill represents a moratorium on all new private insurance plans, after the dated date. IBD describes Camp’s analysis of the measure below.

Our impression was further confirmed Monday when Rep. Dave Camp, the ranking member on Ways and Means, told us that “any existing plan will not be able to enroll members.” There will be “a prohibition,” the Michigan Republican said, “on enrolling individuals in private health plans” after the bill becomes law in 2013.

All of this and more can be yours, for a minimum price of $1Tr over the next ten years.

But finally, somewhere along the line of The Euthanasia Care Express, the voters began to awaken to the massive fraud occurring in Washington, DC. No wonder Tea Party Activists are laughing at Congressman Carnahan and knocking on the doors of Senator McCaskill’s legislative offices.

Ahh, that magical number $1Tr. It has really jolted the public to attention. Democrats holding more tenuous seats on The House find themselves forced to address where this gargantuan pile of swag is actually being steered.

In fact, the Blue Dog Democrats are threatening to stop the bill cold if they don’t get at least rhetorical cover. The Hill Newspaper describes the concerns of The Blue Dog Democrats.

“It’s the spending and the cost. The [Congressional Budget Office score] last week was really a hit across the bow,” said Rep. Baron Hill (D-Ind.), a Blue Dog leader and member of the Energy and Commerce Committee. “Blue Dogs took that as an opportunity to try and make some sense out of all the spending that’s in the bill. We must get it under control.”

Yet Barack Obama remains unchallenged in the art of partisan hatchet-wielding in the guise of soothing rhetoric. He dismissed concerns the bill will cost more than the entire GDP of at least 100 countries by accusing his opponents of political gamesmanship absent decent moral principal.

“I understand that some will try to delay action until the special interests can kill it, while others will simply focus on scoring political points,” Obama said. “We’ve done that before.”

The President assures us all that things are OK and that we all can ignore arguments against his policies. Relax, and go back to sleep America. Take the sedatives and socialism won’t hurt a bit. If we the people allow it, the Obama Administration can be a cozy, relaxing Bedtime for Democracy.
