Well, here we are at the one year anniversary of Barack Obama, "The One We were Supposed To Be Waiting For" (The One), Mr. Hope N. Change (that's mine), being sworn in as President of the United States. He had a huge majority of his fellow Democrats in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. He had an agenda. Eventually, he got a super-majority in the Senate with Arlen Specter (D-PA) switching parties and the seating of Stuart Smalley Al Franken (D-MN). I sit here imagining The One was remembering what Cody Jarrett said at the end of White Heat, "Made it, Ma! Top of the world!" If so, Obama should have remembered the very last lines of that movie, "He finally got to the top of the world. And it blew right up in his face."
While I wouldn't express the events of Obama's first year as President quite so dramatically, there has definitely been a shift. The One came into office vowing to fix the economy and implement his leftist, statist agenda upon America; additionally, he was going to reset America's place in the world. With the Democratic majority he had in Congress, it looked like it was going to happen. But he did it in such a hyper-partisan and incompetent manner that all he could do to justify his and Congressional Democrats' actions was to blame his predecessor, President George W. Bush, repeatedly (something Paul Krugman believes didn't happen).
Worse for The One, the American people noticed. They saw how "The Chicago Way" of politics worked and didn't like it; the backroom deals, the hyper-partisanship, the lies, the incompetency, the failed promises, etc. But the man who was supposed to be able to see what the American people wanted during his political campaign ignored those same American people for his whole first year in office.
The elections of Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell as governors of New Jersey and Virginia respectively should have given The One a clue that something about what he was doing was amiss. A message was sent in the election of NY-23, even though Democrats won over what was a legitimate 3rd-party conservative candidate. But he and the Democrats continued to go all in with the agenda, even though the health care "reform" had been completely turned on its head with all the lack of transparency and deals like "The Louisiana Purchase" and "The Cornhuckster Kickback". It got so bad that the "reform" is now opposed by the leftists who helped put The One in office.
What is undoubtedly is The One's worst transgression is that he's made America and Americans less safe against Islamist terrorists, especially those Obama said he wanted to fight, Al Qaeda. With his apology tour, his delay in deciding to reinforce troops in Afghanistan (and providing a date to the terrorists of when we'll be out of there), his (and his useless Attorney General's) plan to investigate supposed "torture" (a word rendered completely meaningless by Obama and his leftist minions) by those individuals who have kept the country safe for these last eight years, his non-plan to close Gitmo, and the most egregious act, trying the 9/11 terrorists in civilian court (and all the problems that will entail), The One has been shown to be a feckless and unserious Commander in Chief. The terrorism committed by Islamists in Little Rock, AR, Fort Hood, and over the skies of Detroit have put this incompetence on display for everyone, especially America's enemies, to see. This is one area where I truly want Obama to succeed, but not in the way he's been doing it; he has to finally get it into his head that he has to not only show a lot more toughness, he has to be a lot tougher, a lot smarter, than what America and the world has seen.
The Senate super-majority is gone with the election of Senator Scott Brown (R-MA; did you ever think you'd ever see that?). Brown has been pushing hard that he would be the 41st vote that kills this health "reform" travesty being shoved down the throats of the American people. Even in deep Blue Massachusetts (as opposed to the "Massachusettes" of Marcia Martha Coakley), the people said enough, and did so emphatically.
I believe this is just the beginning of the humbling of The One, bringing him back down to planet Earth, something he needs to accept. We'll see if Obama actually notices what has been going on, or continues down his arrogant path towards irrelevance.
