The most recent cover-up is the complete lack of security for the Benghazi, Libya consulate that resulted in four Americans, including the first U.S. Ambassador in 35 years, murdered. The Obama regime's State Department, under Hillary Clinton, is refusing to answer any questions about why nobody in the regime put in place any protection for its people, that is until the FBI completes its investigation. The FBI has people in Libya that can't get to Benghazi because of the lack of security for the investigation. Hillary and State want people to believe the FBI only needs to see what happened in Benghazi and then issue a report (which won't be released until conveeeeniently after the election), when in actuality, the major investigation should be directed at Washington and Turtle Bay, because that is where the failures occurred. The regime's actions fit the description of a major cover-up.
But this isn't the first cover-up by the Obama regime. By my count and including the one above, there have been at least four (probably more) major cover-ups by this lawless administration. The first was the Department of Energy's "green energy" loan program that was passed under President Bush and massively expanded by Obama and the Democrats in Porkulus. The second had to with the deep water drilling moratorium issued by the Department of the Interior following the BP oil disaster. The third is the Operation Fast & Furious cover-up by Obama, Attorney General Holder, and the Department of Justice.
The Obama regime, which hates it when an Inspector General exposes the regime's corruption and usually fires the IG, whitewashed the political motivation behind the DoE's "green energy" loans (myself, I call it a money laundering operation since the federal government gave taxpayer dollars in the form of "loans" to firms owned by wealthy Democrats and I have no doubt some of the money made its way back into the Obama campaign; I would say the same about Obama's infrastructure jobs scheme to send our money to Democrat unions, especially of the public sector variety, which would end up back to Obama's coffers). This was exposed when Democrat-backed Solyndra filed for bankruptcy liquidation after the DoE gave this trainwreck of a company more than $500 million of taxpayer money, and illegally letting Solyndra pay back its wealthy Democrat creditors instead of the American people. A large percentage of other "green energy" companies, also owned by wealthy Democrats, have likewise gone bankrupt as well after receiving our money. And yet, Energy Secretary Chu still has a job after misusing all these taxpayer dollars, and I'm sure others involved with Solyndra and this "loan" program are still at the DoE.
Then there is the Interior Department's deep water drilling moratorium following the BP disaster. I wrote a post about this two years ago when it was discovered by Interior's IG that Obama's then-Energy Czar, Carol Browner, inserted knowingly false language into the moratorium document. Interior Secretary Salazar wanted language inserted to say the moratorium was peer-reviewed; Browner supplied the language even though no peer-reviewed study was done. The experts named in the moratorium said "hold the phone" here because they emphatically said this wasn't peer-reviewed at all. But it didn't matter; Salazar kept the moratorium in place until forced by a federal judge to change it (even after it was changed, the judge ordered the new moratorium changed again, eventually slapping a contempt charge on the DoI; however, a Circuit Court allowed the new moratorium to stand until it was lifted a few months afterwards). Browner has since left her job with the regime, but Salazar remains, as does (I believe) the Counselor to the Secretary Steve Black, the guy who signed off on the fraudulent language Browner and her people inserted.
Then there is the Operation Fast & Furious cover-up, which has seen Attorney General Holder receiving his well-deserved contempt of Congress and President Obama using "executive privilege" in keeping Congress from seeing relevant OF&F-related documents, along with denying Congress access to hear testimony from a White House national security staffer (who was sent by the regime to Iraq). I go into more detail in this post. Of those in the DoJ who were involved in lying to Congress about OF&F, former U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke and Holder's emmissary in communications to Congress Ronald Weich were the only two major resignation prior to the ones that occurred a few days ago: Burke resigned not for lying to Congress but for illegally smearing one of the OF&F whistleblowers; Weich, who wrote the lying letter to Congress, didn't resign until five months after it was retracted. The two who resigned recently were former Acting Director of the ATF Kenneth Melson, who had been reassigned from that role but was still at the DoJ, and Deputy Assistant Attorney General Jason Weinstein. Three others involved with lying to Congress and keeping Holder in the dark about OF&F are still at the DoJ: Holder's Chief of Staff Gary Grindler (he was a Deputy Attorney General), Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer who heads the Criminal Division, and Holder’s former Deputy Chief of Staff Monty Wilkinson (he works at the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys). Since Obama and Holder haven't done a thing to root out these contemptible individuals from the DoJ, they are complicit in this scandal and cover-up. To add, the Spanish-language Univision will air an OF&F investigation special tomorrow night.
News has come out from the Obama regime, in the form of a Friday-night-document-dump the regime is known for, that there is a fall guy for the regime's ever-changing narrative (ie., lies) on the terrorist attack in Libya: Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. As reported via Jammie Wearing Fool:
“In the immediate aftermath (of the assault), there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously following protests earlier that day at our embassy in Cairo,” spokesman Sean Turner said in the statement. “We provided that initial assessment to executive branch officials and members of Congress, who used that information to discuss the attack publicly.”
OK. But as JWF says, "The problem is this just isn’t plausible." As noted by Fox News [emphasis mine]:
However, sources have told Fox News that intelligence officials knew within 24 hours the attack that left the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans dead was terrorism, and that they suspected it was tied to Al Qaeda.
It's unclear, then, why the intelligence community told Executive Branch officials it was spontaneous.
I don't think the highlighted part is the right question. The question is WHEN did the intelligence community tell the regime it was a pre-planned terrorist attack. After all, even if they did provide the initial assessment that this was spontaneous shortly after they found out about the murders in Benghazi, the intelligence apparatus knew shortly thereafter that the "spontaneous" aspect was wrong within a day; yet, for at least a week, regime officials were trotted out to claim that there was no pre-planned attack. It doesn't make sense for the intelligence people to hold back on the change in the assessment and let the regime repeatedly make asses out of themselves, which includes blaming a video. If it turns out the DNI office didn't report the change, then Clapper has got to go immediately; that's something that could be found out fairly quickly. Because if the change was immediately reported up to the White House and Obama, then someone else in the regime is lying.
But again, none of this explains the lax security in Benghazi that left the consulate facility, which had already been bombed once this past June, completely vulnerable to another terrorist attack in an extremely dangerous part of Libya (remember, the FBI sent to "investigate" still hasn't gotten there because of how dangerous the Benghazi area is). This is the main cover-up of this tragedy because the Obama regime has refused to come clean.
The Watergate cover-up by the Nixon administration saw nobody killed. The Bush-era DoJ "scandal" that saw Attorney General Gonzales vilified had to do with eight U.S. Attorneys being legally fired and didn't result in anyone dying. On the contrary, Obama's latest two cover-ups have resulted in the deaths of at least 5 Americans, and in total, hundreds of Mexicans and Libyans. Nearly worse is the cover-up by the Democrat media that refuses to hold the Obama regime accountable for any of this. JWF rightly says [emphasis from original]:
If Mitt Romney has the slightest clue he has to hit Obama hard, and relentlessly, over this. Oh, and Mitt, stress two words: Cover and up. The media’s not going to do it, so it’s up to you.
