The Alaska Media and Their Tell

The Lamestream Media and the Democrat Party have a goal. They want to change the world into a socialist worker’s paradise, in which all are equal (except, of course, for elected Democrats and members of the LSM, who will be just a bit more so).

The LSM try to pretend they’re not biased. But sometimes the poker face slips, and we see the inner MSNBC lurking in the newsroom. And this weekend, we had such a tell in  the inadvertent damning voice mail the staff of KTVA CBS News left with the Joe Miller for U.S. Senate campaign.

FEMALE REPORTER: That’s up to you because you're the expert, but that’s what I would do...I’d wait until you see who showed up because that indicates we already know
something...
[Laughter]
[INAUDIBLE]
FEMALE REPORTER: Child molesters...
MALE REPORTER: Oh yeah... can you repeat Joe Miller’s...uh... list of people, campaign workers, which one's the molester?
[INAUDIBLE]
FEMALE VOICE: We know that out of all the people that will show up tonight, at least one of them will be a registered sex offender.
[Laughter]
MALE REPORTER: You have to find that one person...
[INAUDIBLE]
FEMALE REPORTER: And the one thing we can do is ....we won’t know....we won’t know but if there is any sort of chaos whatsoever we can put out a twitter/facebook alert: saying what the... ‘Hey Joe Miller punched at rally.’
FEMALE REPORTER: Kinda like Rand Paul...I like that.
[Laughter]
FEMALE REPORTER: That’s a good one.

KTVA General Manager Jerry Bever tries to spin problem away, issuing a press release and smiling smugly.

But reading that press release, one is struck as much by what isn’t said as what is.  Here, then, is how to read the KTVA statement.

It’s unfortunate that this recording has happened.

Unfortunate for whom? I’d say it’s a good thing the bias of your news organization was uncovered before Alaskans have a chance to go to the polls on November 2. You have been running a liberal advocacy organization, and now you’ve been caught with your collective pants down.

It’s unfortunate because it does not accurately reflect the journalistic standards of our newsroom …

The standards of your newsroom and the way that it operates are two different things. You have a culture of advocacy for liberal causes and candidates, Mr. Bever, and quickly winking your way through the kabuki theater of a journalism 101 inservice will not change that.

… and the garbled context will no doubt leave more questions than answers.

Yes, it does leave some questions. Let’s start with

  1. How deeply into your station’s management structure is the dedication to electing Democrats embedded?
  2. Or perhaps:

  3. Will you publish a full transcript?

Continuing:

The Miller campaign’s analysis of the recording is incorrect in many material ways ranging from personnel involved in the conversation,

Whether the individual staff are correctly identified seems more like an internal personnel matter than a germane point. The available evidence suggests that all of your staff are hard core Democrat operatives. Alternatively, and more importantly the culture in which they operate seems to encourage partisan attacks. So claiming they are individually misidentified is something of a red herring.

If the interpretation of one or two of these statements is incorrect, it doesn’t necessarily change the gist of the conversation. While it may be vacuously true that the Miller campaign lacks the full context of the conversation, it is incontrovertible that your news staff was engaging in an anti-Miller strategy session.

See question 2, above. The burden of supplying the correct context and showing that the interpretation is innocent is up to you.

And here we’re back to question 2 again. Your organization has had its credibility called into question, Mr. Bever. You might want to address that.

But there can be no quick fix. In fact, it seems clear to many observers that the old media of newspapers and television are dying. Americans and people worldwide are increasingly turning to news sources they know are biased.

What should not be news to the general public is the degree to which journalists in the paid media are hardened, loyal Democrats. Drift into a press room before any candidate function or press conference wearing black and carrying a camera or notepad. Listen to the conversation when no one but Democrat operatives and reporters are present.

It’s one big happy family.

Finally, the tell:

Have we had internal discussions about the level of professionalism we need to bring to our conversations, internally and externally? Of course we have, this is a lesson to learn from.

In other words, “We’ve told our staff not to get caught.”  Because unless the newsroom conversation was substantially as the Miller campaign and commons sense indicate, why was there any need for internal discussions on the level of professionalism?

The public is on to you, LSM.  It’s just a matter of time now before your industry is gone the way of the telegraph, stagecoach, and hand-operated offset press.
