Congress Should Not Have Its Obamacare Paid

Press Conference at 3:30 pm Monday, 9/30/2013

Senator David Vitter (R-LA) and Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) will hold a press conference today, September 30 at 3:30 p.m. EDT at the “Senate Swamp,” on the northeast grounds of the U.S. Capitol. The press conference is to urge House Republicans to include Vitter’s “No Washington Exemption from Obamacare” (S.1497) amendment in the Continuing Resolution (CR).

DeSantis has identical legislation pending in the House called the James Madison Congressional Accountability Act (H.R.3076). Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is likely to send the House passed CR back to them today. Vitter and DeSantis are urging House leadership to include their legislation in their next version.

The Affordable Care Act specified that the only insurance the government can offer Congress and staff are policies offered through an exchange (or otherwise created by Obamacare). Language offered by Chuck Grassley to pay for the insurance at the usual 75% rate used for other federal employees was stripped out, since employers are not allowed to pay for exchange-based insurance.

Many Americans are in the same situation as members of Congress and their staff. Due to the increasingly unpopular Obamacare, many employers no longer offer their group or company-self-paid insurance, and so employees have to find health insurance on the individual market in the exchanges.

Over 90% of Americans polled do not want Congress to get special treatment.

If you’re in DC, see if you can attend. Bring a pitchfork.
