The Expansion of Arrogance… or Just Plain Naivete?

Well that didn’t take long…

082007erase

The Obama administration chooses it’s first terrorist-harboring, terrorist-supporting nation and regime to be officially recognized with talks. today, Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton announced that US officials will be holding talks with Syrian officials in Damascus over the weekend.

The AP reported:

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday that talks were underway between two U.S. representatives and Syrian officials in Damascus.

The Obama administration’s decision to send Jeffrey Feltman, the top State Department envoy on the Mideast, and Daniel Shapiro from the White House to Syria was the most significant sign yet that it is ready to improve relations with the Syrian government after years of tension.

The two American officials held talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem shortly after arriving in the Syrian capital Saturday. But it was not clear whether they would meet with President Bashar Assad during the visit, which was ignored by state-run newspapers in an indication of Damascus’ cautious approach.

Clinton also said President Barack Obama will visit Turkey in the “next month or so.”

At a news conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan, she said Obama had asked her to deliver the message that he would visit soon and said the two allies will consult on the safest, most effective way to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq.

For years Syria has been a gateway and safe haven for Al-Qaeda terrorists into Iraq, Hamas, and Baathists from Saddam’s reign. It’s been a well know fact among those with boots on the ground in Iraq that Syria has been a staging point and gateway for Al-Qaeda terrorists and other foreign fighters to enter Iraq to kill both Iraqis and US soldiers! Syria is also thought to be the place Saddam sent large cashes of WMD according to Saddam Hussein’s No. 2 Air Force officer, Georges Sada and Ali Ibrahim al-Tikriti, southern regional commander for Saddam Hussein’s Fedayeen militia. Syria was also caught building a nuclear plant by Israel which they promptly destroyed.

This “take them out for an ice cream cone” approach to geopolitics especially when it comes to terrorist-harboring and terrorist-supporting nations and regimes is at best Naive and at worst just another example of who this administration plans to expand It’s arrogance.

In related news: Brits to “Recognize” Hezbollah

The Guardian reports:

Britain overturned its policy on a key Middle East issue yesterday by agreeing to talk to Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia movement which fights Israel and is banned as a terrorist organisation by the US.

Bill Rammell, the Foreign Office minister, told MPs the government would authorise “carefully selected” contacts with the political wing of Hezbollah, which is represented in the Lebanese parliament. Other EU countries, including France, already deal with the group.

The move, urged privately by British diplomats for some time, may be partially intended to encourage the US to follow suit as Barack Obama’s administration pursues a fresh approach of engagement with parties shunned by George Bush.

One way or another, this represents another step in the mainstreaming of Islamic terrorism. Via Andy McCarthy at The Corner.
