Tom Donilon* was the national security adviser. He resigned this morning. And now someone needs to fill the post and that someone is Susan Rice. Rice, of course, was the major mouthpiece from the administration assuring us all Benghazi was merely a bunch of people acting out over a little known fim, or something. Remember, Rice was up for Secretary of State but withdrew her name from contention after Republicans said no deal due to the Benghazi bruhaha. So now she gets this job and no vote or confirmation is needed. Musical chairs in DC. The general tone is Donolin had planned to leave after Obama’s first term and that’s not really an unusual excuse.
The NY Times story outlines some of Donolin’s recent duties:
“A central member of Mr. Obama’s foreign-policy team since he first took office, Mr. Donilon, 58, has exerted sweeping influence, mostly behind the scenes, on issues from counterterrorism to the reorientation of America to Asia from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.”
So while rice didn’t get that Secretary of State gig, looks like she got the next best thing in foreign affairs.
