The all too frequent Laughing at Seattle diary

From time to time we might dislike the city or town we live in. Heck, we may even hate it. If you find you’re having one of those days, close your eyes say, well thank goodness I don’t live in Seattle.   Fox News gives us the latest reason Seattle has become a laughingstock among cities.  And rest assured it has nothing to do with its climate, architecture, gorgeous vista of the ocean from a waterfront balcony. No, Seattle has become the butt of jokes because of stupid stuff like this:

”Government workers in the city of Seattle have been advised that the terms  “citizen” and “brown bag” are potentially offensive and may no longer be used in  official documents and discussions.”

According to the article, Seattle’s Office for Civil Rights claims the term brown bag is associated with skin color.  And here you were laboring under the delusion it had something to do with a sack lunch you brought from home. Boy, have you been getting it wrong all these years. “For a lot of particularly African-American community members”, a person from the Civil Rights office said ” the phrase brown bag does bring up associations with the past when a brown bag was actually used, I understand, to determine if people’s skin color was light enough to allow admission to an event or to come into a party that was being held in a private home.”

I have never seen a black individual, African American or one from the islands, cringe or correct anyone for the term brown bag. Heck I’ve even heard several black co-workers indicate in the cafeteria they were “brown baggin'” it that day.  The city suggests in place of using the BB term go with something like “lunch and learn”. Oh, that’s cheery. How about snack and socialize. Eat and meet. Sammich Sack. Bag O’Food.  Really, we should send suggestions. And then on to the word citizens. Heretofore, they shall be referred to as residents, because apparently Seattle has an abundance of people living in Seattle who are not citizens of Seattle.   Wha??
