Illegal Immigrants and their supporters gathered today at the National Mall to highlight their agenda for immigration reform. While we’ve all seen the stories of various parks and monuments, oceans and rivers, closed or blocked due to the slowdown this particular rally was given the go ahead to proceed because as The Hill points out public areas can still be used by citizens when doing “First Amendment-related activities.”
” Reps. John Lewis (D-Ga.), Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.), Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.), Keith Ellision (D-Minn.), Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and Al Green (D-Texas) were among the estimated 200 people arrested by Capitol Police for protesting in the streets.” Rep. Lewis is pleased with the outcome, tweeting that it is his 45th arrest. I repeat, this lawbreaker is a lawmaker. At a rally seeking reform to aid millions of illegal immigrants.
According to CBS, the group was arrested for “crowding, obstructing, and incommoding” because the group blocked off a street. CBS also put the number of arrests at about a hundred people, so there’s a bit of difference there. Also this report clarifies that Lewis has only been arrested 5 times while a Congressman. the other 40 times was during the Civil Rights movement. Still, a five time lawbreaker while in office is not something most politicians want to highlight on a resume. Unless they’re Lewis.
For some reason, when I saw mention of these arrests today, it called to mind Ted Cruz and his filibuster against Obamacare. The hate and rhetoric coming from Dems and some establishment Republicans against him was horrible. But seeing this, I am reminded that what Senator Cruz did was right, and done in the right way. He sought to make changes in a law and did so without breaking any laws. He used every means at his disposal – all within the framework of our laws. Even Wendy Davis and her filibuster in Texas was done in a legal framework. I don’t approve of her message, but she gave it in a lawful manner. Neither Cruz nor Davis got the outcome they sought but both continue with their message.
Likewise, there is nothing illegal about the House sending over piece meal CRs. It is perfectly legal. And sending a budget to the Senate that does not fund an agency or an item, like Obamacare, is also perfectly legal. What the Senate chooses to do with it, is the Senate’s problem. Because they choose to do nothing is not illegal. It wastes time. And accomplishes nothing, but it is not illegal.
But what the 7 representatives did today was illegal. No matter how “small” the charge. I have no sympathy for any of them or the illegal aliens or their supporters who were arrested today. The Reps knew the rules, and chose to break them. The illegal immigrants, know the rules and continue to break them. Their supporters likewise know not to obstruct on a public roadway, but chose to ignore and break the laws.
Respect is earned. None was garnered today for any of those arrested.
