If At First You Don’t Succeed* (Obamacare deadline slides to Mid-Aprilish)

Not really a surprise, but the news was dumped late Tuesday. The original (latest) deadline to sign up for Obamacare was to be March 31st. Just go to the now wonderfully working site, get your free money to help pay for your health insurance, sign up and then don’t worry, be happy. Of course, that’s what they told everyone at the end of December  when the previous deadline was coming up.

But as the Three Stooges once advised, if at first you don’t succeed keep on sucking till you do succeed.*  Notice by the headline that the next drop dead date is a bit iffy.  And I hate to use that phrase when talking about something that has death panels incorporated in it, but it fits.

Wapo has the story out which says there’s a “blue box” you can check to indicate you’ve gone on to the site and started the process to get insurance but you haven’t finished, exactly.  Or maybe you haven’t even started the process. Doesn’t matter. Because as Wapo explains the whole thing is based on the “honor system”.  I’m not going to give you the whole article but please enjoy this part before you go read the whole thing:

“Administration officials said the accommodation is an attempt to prepare for a possible surge of people trying to sign up in the final days before the deadline. Such a flood could leave some people unable to get through the system.”

So, in anticipation of the mass of humanity that’s going to converge on the site they’re moving the goalposts yet again.  The administration argues the move is to ensure everybody has the time to get covered. Never mind that there are those that still have no desire to be covered .  And, of course there is the matter of those who sign up versus those who pay their premiums.  Which would make the insurance companies a little nervous if they weren’t going to recoup some of the losses from the government.  Which of course obtains funds from taxes. Which coincidentally are due mid Aprilish.

*you can argue Curly Howard said keep on sucking till you do suck seed. Either works here.
