MEMBER DIARY

The American Neville Chamberlain

On September 29, 1938, the major powers of Europe, led by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, acceded to Adolf Hitler’s demand to force Czechoslovakia to give up its westernmost border province, the Sudentenland.  Why?  Because the majority of people living in that territory were Germans.  The Munich Pact, or rather the Munich Betrayal, was the height of Chamberlain’s policy of appeasement that emboldened Hitler and led inevitably to World War II.  Yet, Chamberlain flew back from Munich and told the British people : “My good friends, this is the second time in our history that there has come back from Germany to Downing Street peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And now I recommend you to go home and sleep quietly in your beds.

Now we have an American President, Barack Obama who undermines Israel in order to appease Arab, Palestinian and Muslim interests by unilaterally declaring that Israel should return to its pre-1967 borders and give up all territory gained through a series of unprovoked wars against Israel by her Arab neighbors–Territory that is a crucial to Israel’s security and survival as the Sudentenland was to the survival of Czechoslovakia.  Does President Obama not understand history?  Would he risk the destruction of Israel to secure “peace for our time” in a vain effort to achieve his own re-election? Previously the administration’s foreign policy looked like “Amateur Hour” at Foggy Bottom.  Now, however, it threatens our own national security by threatening the security of our staunchest and most reliable ally in the Middle East.  If Obama succeeds in achieving “peace with honor” at the expense of Israel, none of us can “go home and sleep quietly.”
