The Next Presidential American Idol

It’s that time of year again, a time when football season is nearly over and many of us yield up the remote control to the TV as remuneration for a season (mostly) uninterrupted pigskin perusal.

With Season 7 of 24 kicking off, some can reasonably replace Monday Night Football with seeing the war on terror as we’d like it to be, but Tuesday thru Thursday is hopelessly locked on that other Fox production, American Idol.

A production where contestants sing, dance and show off their crowd savvy. They stand before a panel of judges for questions about their performance, and adoring fans simply text in their votes on who goes on to the next round and who leaves.

Sound like an overdone television concept? With all the copycats such as Dancing with the Stars et al, it does border on just that.

I have a new concept, not yet floated to Hollywood as I’m thinking it’s already been done. You might have seen the season finale on November 4th, 2008.

The show was basically the same premise as Idol, except a much longer process, lasting over two years! I’m surprised anyone could stay tuned for that long; I followed the first year or so of it, until my favorite was sent packing and somebody I thought was much worse went on to be one of the two finalists.

The second finalist was horribly bad; I couldn’t believe he was still up there at all. He faced a woman in his finals, but I guess he sang and danced and put on a better show, I really wasn’t watching those two as I didn’t like either of them. She was no better, and the two combined didn’t have the experience of the last guy left on my side.

Coming to the final few weeks of the show, each contestant got to pick a partner to go on with, and perform apart at different locations. It was almost like that other show with that rich guy with all the hair? “The Apprentice“, that’s the one. Their combined performances affected their total score, so it was important to pick wisely for the teams to win.

As I said, I wasn’t really too interested at this point, as I didn’t like any of them until the last guy from the team I liked and thought was better picked a real bombshell for his partner. She was hot and suddenly people who quit watching started to get interested again. She could really sing what the crowds wanted to hear, so got tons of text votes bringing their total score up till they looked like they would win the whole thing.

Then the worst possible thing I could have imagined happened. The guy I thought had the most experience start blowing it bad, tripping and singing the wrong songs, really weird how he self-destructed. As I said, I really didn’t have much hope for him anyway as he didn’t play the crowds very well.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the Blue team’s fans started doing things to sabotage the woman partner, and really tearing her apart. She was better I thought than any of the other three, but had no real clue what was happening with the sabotage until she was tripped up by it. Not only that, but her repertoire was somewhat limited, not really ready for the big stage. Too bad, as I thought she may have taken her team all the way, but with limited experience the thing just wasn’t meant to be.

What I thought was weird, was that during the Debate Competition I thought she did very well, the other guy was a putz I thought, but what do I know? Nothing I guess since in the end the team I thought would be best ended up losing.

I got out and texted in my vote, and got as many of my friends to do it as well, but I have a sneaking suspicion the other team may have been texting more than once; at least that’s what I hear.

It was a real letdown for me at first, since I thought experience and the right decisions would win in the end, but guess it’s more flash and making people think you’ve got it all that counts.

I just wish I could remember the name of that show. It’s supposed to be on again after a two year hiatus and I want to make sure my team wins this time.

GAK! Have Presidential politics come to this crap? I sure hope not, we have way too much to lose. I have a feeling we’re about to be able to tell the uninformed “I told you so”, but small consolation that’s going to be.
