No Pale Pastels: A Lesson From Ronald Reagan Lost On The IL GOP

“What does the Illinois GOP stand for?”
-Illinois Tea Party coordinator Denise Cattoni

In his 1975 speech to CPAC Ronald Reagan said that, “Our people look for a cause to believe in. Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people”.

Sadly in the year 2012(going on 2013) the lessons of Ronald Reagan, who was born in this state, are totally lost on the Illinois GOP.  Instead of offering bold differences from the Utopian Statist Democrats that run this state the Illinois GOP is effectively being the no pale pastels Reagan warned against.  On issue after issue, topic after topic, one is hard pressed to tell the difference between an Illinois Republican and an Illinois Democrat.  Whether it is drivers licenses for illegal immigrants, or fixing this states pension mess the Republicans in this state are indistinguishable from the Democrats.

The Illinois GOP platform in part says that sanctuary city policies should be reversed, illegal immigration stopped, our borders and ports secured, and section F states, “We further call on the Governor and the General Assembly to abandon incentives for illegal aliens to settle in Illinois.”  However, the IL GOP platform means nothing to some elected Illinois Republican lawmakers who this week voted to allow illegal immigrants to get drivers licenses in this state.  By voting to allow illegals to have state issued drivers licenses those Republicans opted to raise a banner of pale pastels instead of being a bold party opposed to illegal immigration and dead set against granting them special privileges or benefits(note that several of those IL Republicans who voted for illegals to have drivers licenses in the past voted for the Illinois version of the DREAM Act).

Illinois Republicans are trying to give illegals drivers licenses because they have fallen into the same trap that Republicans nationally have; they have to abandon principles and do what the Democrats do and give illegals goodies in order to court the Hispanic vote.  I really wish Republicans in this state and nationally would study history just a little bit because it would disprove this whole silly notion that amnesty(or drivers licenses as is the case here in Illinois) would send Hispanic votes to the GOP.  In 1984 Ronald Reagan got 37% of the Hispanic vote in his reelection bid(which he won in a landslide), two years later he reluctantly signed the Simpson-Mazzoli amnesty bill, two years after that in 1988 George H.W. Bush would get 30% of the Hispanic vote, a lose of 7% AFTER Republicans have given some 3 million illegals amnesty.  What in the world makes Republicans think that giving another 10 million illegals amnesty or giving them drivers licenses is going to translate into them getting more of the Hispanic vote?  The obvious answer to me is that they are listening more to the consultants and neo-Statist pundits than they are to their principles or convictions.
