The GOP Death Spiral Is To Follow Lindsey Graham
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham is of the opinion that to defeat his Gang of 8 amnesty plan for immigration reform will lead to a death spiral for the Republican Party. Graham said on NBC’s Meet The Press, “After eight years of President Obama’s economic policies, and quite frankly foreign policy, people are going to be looking around,” he said. “But if we don’t pass immigration reform, if we don’t get it off the table in a reasonable, practical way, it doesn’t matter who you run in 2016. We’re in a demographic death spiral as a party and the only way we can get back in good graces with the Hispanic community in my view is pass comprehensive immigration reform. If you don’t do that, it really doesn’t matter who we run.”
That is total poppycock. Should conservative Republicans in the Senate and House stand strong and defeat this effort to grant amnesty, which is what the Gang of 8 plan is, the GOP will not enter into or continue on a death spiral, it will breathe some life into the party as the Republican base gains some confidence in the party gain.
In truth it is the moderation and effort to make the GOP Democrats-lite that are leading to the real death spiral in the Republican Party. The GOP had massive gains in the 2010 election cycle at all levels(federal, state, and local) because of the fire and energy of the Tea Party and because the Tea Party and GOP were sticking to conservative principles of limited government, fiscal responsibility, adherence to free markets, and standing up for the Constitution.
Amnesty and the other things moderate-liberal RINO’s like Lindsey Graham want(more debt, not defunding Obamacare, arming Syrian terrorist etc) are turning off the GOP base(see Mitt Romney’s loss in November).
In 2012 moderate Republicans like Tommy Thompson in Wisconsin to Mitt Romney lost because they couldn’t turn out the GOP base, not because of the Hispanic vote. As political pundits have been pointing out Hispanics are 7% or so of the electorate and even if they voted 70% for Romney we still would have lost the election to Obama. Pandering and amnesty is not the key to our salvation or pathway to victory in elections.
If amnesty was the way to get Hispanics to vote Republican then the Simpson-Mazzoli amnesty bill of 1986 would have already done that, but it didn’t. Pew polling shows that Reagan in 1984 got 37% of the Hispanic vote, in 1988 Bush 41 got 30% of the Hispanic vote and that was after amnesty. I can guarantee you now that if some how the Gang of 8 amnesty plan passed the results would be the same, we would lose Hispanic voters not gain them.
So instead of amnesty lets trying firing up the GOP base and drawing people to the conservative/Tea Party movement by being frank and honesty with them, articulating our principles, and standing up for those principles. If we do that we can send more Trey Gowdy’s, Michele Bachmann’s, Ted Cruz’s, and Mike Lee’s to Washington and hopefully put a conservative in the White House in 2016(paging Sarah Palin).
But if we go the Lindsey Graham route and press on with amnesty and other things then the GOP will indeed die not because of Hispanics, but because the conservative GOP base will leave the party and start a new second party that will raise a banner of no pale pastels.
