Michael Sam Is Not A Hero; Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi Is
Apparently to many out there being drafted near the end of the NFL’s 7th, and last, round from a big college football school that is in one of the four major conferences is enough to make someone a hero.
Since Michael Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Ram’s Saturday the media, social networking sites, heck even smoke signals were all abuzz along the lines of this being the greatest thing to ever happen in the world.
Why is a young man being drafted to play a professional sport all anyone can talk about?
Well because Michael Sam, who is a guy, happens to like other guys(I mean really really likes other guys).
That is it.
The sole reason anyone knows, let alone cares, about Michael Sam is because he publicly admitted(marketing having absolutely nothing to do with it) that he isn’t attracted to girls.
That should be the end of the story.
But it isn’t.
Because everyone has been so relentless with the whole notion that Michael Sam is a big deal, a bigger deal than the kidnapped Nigerian girls, a bigger deal than the missing airplane(that is still missing according to the latest from CNN), I just have to yell STOP!
There is a story out there that is a lot bigger of a deal than the sexual orientation of someone likely to be cut by the Rams after the first preseason game and that is the tale of Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi who is currently being chained to his bed in a Mexican jail.
Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi is a combat veteran who was recently diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder along with injuries after he survived an IED attack on his military convoy while serving overseas.
On April 1st. Sgt. Tahmooressi was driving along an unmarked part of the US-Mexico border near San Diego with everything he owned in his truck including several firearms. Due to his injuries Tahmooressi can easily become lost and thus found himself in Mexico unwillingly.
Instead of allowing Andrew to turn around and return to the United States Mexican authorities arrested Sgt. Tahmooressi because of those firearms, which he disclosed and was lawfully in possession of.
Since his arrest over a month ago Sgt. Tahmooressi has been chained to his bed by Mexican authorities who are not considering releasing Andrew back to the US until a hearing at the end of the month.
Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi is a hero in every sense of the word and because of that this country should be doing a Hell of a lot more to help bring him home.
Instead all we are getting is talk and praise and more talk and more praise for a football player fresh out of college that happens to be gay.
Michael Sam got a phone call over the weekend from President Obama, what President Obama should have done was call the President of Mexico and demanded Sgt. Tahmooressi’s immediate release.
