Governor Rick Perry has ordered funding for a border surge to bring safety to the citizens of the Great State of Texas. This is from AG Abbott's official website.
Attorney General Abbott Strongly Supports Immediate Deployment of State Resources to Target Influx of Illegal Border Crossings
AUSTIN -- Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott issued the following statement strongly supporting state funding for border operations approved by Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Speaker Joe Straus:
“Texas is stepping up and doing what the federal government has failed to do – secure the porous border. The Obama Administration's failure to enforce the rule of law has empowered transnational gangs and cartels to smuggle people into our state from around the world -- including members of deadly gangs like MS-13. The Department of Public Safety will have the tools and resources it needs to curtail illegal smuggling, horrific human trafficking and cartel imported crime. Securing the border will reduce the illegal activity which – in turn – will promote the legitimate trade that helps make Texas the leading exporting state in the country.”
Today’s announcement of additional state resources comes less than a week after Attorney General Abbott requested immediate federal funds to help secure Texas’s border. In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, Abbott requested the additional funds to assist with the influx of child immigrants that have so overwhelmed the U.S. Border Patrol that federal agents are devoting time and resources to the humanitarian aspects of the surge, and are not available to secure the border and successfully stop criminal activity.
AG Abbott said there will be more information posted as things develop. And from the Governor himself:
From Governor Perry’s press release:
“The responsibility for securing the border rests exclusively on the federal government. The federal government’s failure to secure the border has created an incentive for families to send their children on a dangerous, and sometimes fatal, journey. Until the federal government fulfills its duty, it falls on the State of Texas to address those obligations.”
Good going Governor!
