Is Social Conservatism Dead?

Are economic issues and cultural issues mutually exclusive?

On October 6 The Supreme Court Of The United States refused to take up the challenge of 5 states who were defending their 10th amendment right to uphold Marriage as it has always been understood. The result? The number of states that are now being compelled to recognize this radically different form of Marriage is up to 30(3 states are still contesting it). In these news articles the general consensus is that “social” conservatism is dead or on its deathbed. But is it?

Whenever people think of social issues their first thought is either same-sex “marriage” or “abortion”. However there is more to our Culture Wars than these  two issues, they are the focal points though. There is a growing movement in this country that wants to shed “social” conservatives or Values Voters because of their emphasis on Family and Right-To-Life; that if the Conservative Movement focused all of its time and energy on just economic issues, education, and immigration(though some people think conservatives should give up on that one too). They say because of our emphasis(they never point out who is doing the emphasizing) on these “losing” battles we are alienating Millennials(I’m a Millennial) despite the fact they aren’t voting in droves like blacks.

Get to the point already!

Alright alright! My point is this: “social” conservatism is “fiscal conservatism”. I say this because one has to consider that taxes, welfare, spending, have an effect on the family. We have seen with the Great Society that government has eviscerated the black family. We see that newly weds are taxed at a higher rate, and government spending can cause financial heartache in the home because of inflation, price controls, subsidies, and other things that the government does but shouldn’t. So what exactly is Social Conservatism then? Social Conservatism is typically defined as preserving the social mores and traditions of a culture. Hold on a second; prior to 1913 the U.S. didn’t operate on any standard tax system.  Wouldn’t eliminating the tax system be considered Social Conservatism? What of our National Debt? Let’s look for a little guidance shall we?

The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. –Proverbs 22:7

To all those naysayers out there, I say that’s pretty relevant and applicable in today’s political climate don’t you think? Congress is chalk full of rich politicians who just want to stuff their pockets on the backs of tax payers without doing the job we sent them to do. Just borrow, borrow, and borrow some more. So long as China and other countries are willing to accept those I.O.U’s we’ll be okay. That’s even more true if you live in my home state of California.

What about eliminating the Department of Education? The New Deal and Great Society programs? Correct me if I’m wrong but there was a whole period in this countries history where people grew up without ever knowing or perceiving the concept of these programs correct? Aren’t these programs now apart of our culture? By “culture” I mean our culture of dependency. I’m going to take this further and say that Social Conservatism is not the preservation of these programs, but changing, eliminating, or even privatizing them. Now explain to me how that’s contrary to what Fiscal Conservatism stands for?

I reject entirely that these two are separate from one-another. Issues like Marriage are fiscal issues as much as they are social. As much as we were told-and lied to-Obamacare is using taxpayer dollars to fund abortions. So is Social Conservatism dead or dying?

If you’re asking me this question I will say with the utmost confidence that the answer is “no” based on the evidence provided. However I will let you decide. Can civilization survive with a strong economy that lacks a moral foundation? Or can we not have a strong economy without a moral foundation? I’ve made my decision, and if you are still having second thoughts then read this.

As always let’s continue to fight for Faith, Family, and Freedom. God bless you all and God bless America.
