The Case For a Santorum Exit

Rick Santorum appears to be a great man, a solid republican and a wonderful retail campaigner.  He is not a nationally viable candidate at this time.  He may have won or tied Iowa but let’s face it, he cannot beat Romney and cant beat Obama.  Imagine the impact a Santorum exit today or tomorrow could have on the Gingrich campaign.  It would stop the “drudged” up old story from a bitter ex wife and build fast momentum for Newt.

I know there are Santorum fans here despite his big government leanings and I applaud him for his campaign to date.  Like Perry, I think he has a lot to gain by stepping out and joining Newt.  It would be a massive help to Newt and given their friendship, I am sure Newt would take excellent care of him.  It would also set him up for another run in 4 years should Obama win.

God Bless you Rick and all of your supporters, but now is the time to go.  The impact you could make will never be bigger or more important in this cycle.

See e.g. his support Arlen Spector.

It would be nice, but don’t hold your breath for him to do the selfleff thing that Perry did.

Isn’t it funny, how virtually none of us from PA, who know him , have a good word to say about him?

But yet, you see many Texans saying nice things about Perry. It tells you something, beyond approval ratings.

I’d go into again why Sen Santorum is unelectable, but fortunately, almost everyone on this site seems to understand that.

Oh, if only Iowans were as hip! Well, let the Children of the Corn stay children for another four years. And remain “first in the nation”. I wouldn’t want some mean man to take away their rattle.

He feels more entitled after winning IA. He’ll stay in as long as he has some money. I’d like to see him exit after SC though if he doesn’t do well.

“but let?s face it, he (Santorum) cannot beat Romney and cant beat Obama”

Statements like this are garbage. You don’t know what can or cannot happen. Obama is a weak president. His ratings are low 40s and he loses to ‘generic Republican’.

Santorum, Gingrich and Romney all CAN beat Obama. Maybe they wont if we keep displaying self-defeating negativism, but dont say it cant happen.

Can’t is too strong a word. IMHO it will be harder for him to beat BO than it would be for either Mitt or Newt.

because with Rick Perry out and endorsing Newt I think we have weeded the field down to a manageable number. I’d like to see the perennial ‘how-can-I-get-elected’ Ron Paul bow out first if someone has to go. At this point I’m down to Newt and Santorum and I’m not leaning either way.

I think Santorum has the ability to make a run for it and the money will come in if he’s successful in SC and FL.

    HOWEVER

If he now has a poor showing then I agree he should bow out given I REALLY don’t want Romney. If I’m left to choose between Romney or Gingrich, I’ll choose Newt.
