The Newt Show! Romney Exposed on 2nd Amendment!

Everyone this morning is talking about how good the Republican debate was last night. It was a good debate and had several memorable moments. Here is my take of what happened and who came out on top.

1) Newt Gingrich clearly won the debate. He probably has won all the debates though so that is not new. But he seemed to win this one by the largest margin yet. At one moment his answer even got a standing ovation from the audience. That was the first time we have seen that in all these events to date. Newt said he wants to teach young people how to get a job and then ultimately how to ‘own’ the job.

Gingrich stood strong on the work ethic and what makes America great. Probably the biggest positive thing that he did was make everyone realize what they like about Newt and how great it would be to have him taking it to Obama in the debates next fall. Newt is an idea guy. It would be nice to have a Republican in the White House that the Democrats can’t say is dumb for a change!

There is not an endorsement but there is no one else in the race who knows how Washington works and potentially has the ability to get things done there as well as he does. Some say that is a bad thing but if Newt truly does what he says in his 21st Century Contract With America we would be taking a big step towards restoring the country to what it should be. No one can speak as in depth about the issues as Newt can.

2) Mitt Romney did a ‘capable’ job which is what he always does. Did he inspire anyone? Not really. He never does for some reason. He seems to come off like a “Ken doll’ and that may be the problem. On the other hand his real problem with conservatives (not RINO’s) may be his record as MA Governor. Despite what you hear from some there was really nothing conservative about his MA record and that fact makes it hard for a true conservative to support him.

Romney got booed when he came out in full support last night of Obama’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). He stated that just as he is “sure” President Obama will not abuse the provisions in that bill about detaining American citizens without charging them with anything he would not abuse that power either. Hmmm, really? Romney stated that ‘the people’ elect people to represent them and then they ‘trust’ those people not to abuse the power they have been given. Really? We (the American people) don’t blindly trust anyone. We believe in what Reagan said, “Trust but Verify”. NDAA is a scary bill and should not be taken lightly. Does anyone know where Newt stands on this bill?

Romney also gave an answer about gun control that left many 2nd Amendment supporters yelling at their TV screens. He said that while he did not support any ‘new’ gun laws we should actively enforce the ones on the books now. His big claim to showing his support of gun rights was a bill he championed as the Governor of MA which according to Mitt was a good compromise between guns rights advocates and people who oppose gun rights. He highlighted that the bill actually had a provision that “allowed hunters to cross roads with a rifle”. Wow! Really? That is his idea of supporting gun rights? Geez, he sounds like he supports the UN position on this subject.

He also told us about how he likes to hunt every now and then, but he is not an active hunter. So Mitt showed his hand on the 2nd Amendment with his words that gun rights are a ‘compromise’ and not a certainty. This was a huge moment if you are a gun rights supporter. Mitt sounds like he is one of those that say it is OK to have a rifle for hunting but not much else. The 2nd Amendment is not a comprise with gun rights opponents. It is black and white with no gray. American citizens have the right to bear arms and that cannot be infringed upon. Period. Romney raised taxes on guns in MA by a huge amount while Governor.

Of course, the media folks say Romney did fine and nothing that took place last night will change his status as the front runner. I don’t fully agree with that spin.

3) Rick Santorum started out fast attacking Romney and actually getting him to fall into a trap about one of Romney’s SuperPac ads claiming Santorum thinks Felons (in jail) should be able to vote. Santorum says he thinks once you complete your sentence and are not on parole or probation anymore then you should be able to vote again. He flat out asked Romney to state his position on that and after a couple awkward moments Mitt said he did not support that idea. I tend to think that most conservatives do not support the right of former felons to vote again but would like to hear your thoughts on that subject. It seemed like Santorum’s trap may have ended up making Romney look better to conservatives on that topic.

Rick seemed to slow down some after that opening battle and it pretty much seemed like Newt stole the show after the first 30 minutes of the debate.

4) Governor Perry was sharp giving his best debate performance by far. The question is will it be too little too late to help him? He made some excellent points including that based on Freddie and Fannie the Federal Government should not be involved in housing at all. He got loud positive response from the audience several times but if he does not win SC (which he won’t) will he drop out of the race? Perry hinted around this week that he will decide after Saturday if he stays in or not. Well, that is not a good thing to say! How many people in South Carolina will vote for a guy if they are not sure he will be in the race next week?

Perry is too far behind in the polls to win SC. His best hope is 3rd but is that even realistic when you consider Ron Paul has a solid base of supporters? Probably the best he can hope for would be to beat out Santorum but that will even be tough. I hope he does well though.

5) Ron Paul really just needs to talk about the economy and his stances on that subject. He does great on economics issues but when it goes to foreign policy he loses a lot of people. In fact, he loses the majority of people! Sure, there are many that support his views but not enough to get him anywhere near winning the nomination. Yes, yes, despite what Ron Paul supporters say.

An excellent point he made was when he reminded people that up until 1913 there was no income tax and that he wants us to go back to “0%” on income tax which would be great. He did not give a real clear positive answer though when challenged by Rick Santorum about gun rights. Ron Paul has such a strong base of supporters he will probably do well in SC.

6) Glad to see Huntsman out of the race. The best part about Huntsman was he rides dirt bikes like I do!

The bottom line is if someone does not beat Mitt Romney in South Carolina it looks like there is no stopping him. Right now with Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry all doing well in the debate they will split the conservative vote which helps Mitt Romney win again. Ron Paul will get his share of votes and that helps Romney also. He won’t need that much to win just like in Iowa.

I think Newt did well enough to cement a second place showing in SC but he really needs a win. There is another debate Thursday evening on CNN. If any one is going to beat Romney in SC they need to score more hits on him then. It looks like Gingrich is the only one within range of stopping the Romney momentum at this point unless Perry pulls out some kind of miracle.

Nice post!

After that performance Newt must rise in the polls and Mitt will fall some. Did the majority of people even listen to Romney’s comments on gun laws????

Romney has been exposed on the 2nd Amendment

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 17th at 2:25PM EDT (link)

Romney has been “exposed” on the 2nd Amendment by the largest 2nd-Amendment group in Masachusetts.

He had a very good record here. And in fact the law that you’re talking about was very significant here, and Romney helped prevent it from happening.

Please don’t try to portray that solid record as a betrayal. It’s pure counterfactual garbage.

Romney’s real record on the 2nd Amendment is best told by the people in Massachusetts who tirelessly support the 2nd Amendment here, the ones who operate the largest bonafide Pro-2nd Amendment organization in this state that is taken seriously and influences policy because they’re taken seriously. Mitt Romney’s record during his tenure as governor here was very good to excellent.

More particularly:

Legislation: During the Romney Administration, no anti-Second Amendment or anti-sportsmen legislation made its way to the Governor’s desk.

Governor Romney did sign five pro-Second Amendment/pro-sportsmen bills into law.

If you'd like to contest Mitt Romney's

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 17th at 2:27PM EDT (link)

Record and particularly the law you talk about involving carrying loaded firearms across public roads, please come to Massachusetts so I can discuss it with you. It was an important piece of legislation here and Romney came down on the right side of it. Amazing that we have people here on this blog that are now trying to use that against him, but that’s how screwed up the Conservatives are.

I hope most Conservatives aren't moved

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 17th at 2:43PM EDT (link)

I hope most Conservatives aren’t moved by this post one way or the other because it’s not very well written or thought out. In particular it distorts Romney’s actual 2nd Amendment record in Massachusetts very luridly.

You can legitimately try to assail him on other matters but his record as Governor here in Massachusetts on the 2nd Amendment was, as I said, very good to excellent – in a state traditionally hostile to the 2nd Amendment with an overwhelming preponderance of real, Anti-2nd Amendment people in the legislature.

So please, pick a different fight. You’re just wrong about this, and I know because I live in Massachusetts.

So ,"Out of Context" is not too strong ,in this case?

In a contest like this one there a lot of opinions and pronostications. We should always base our opinions and prognostications on the facts first. In the end the facts and the record are all anyone has.

Romney weak on Second Amendment

barleycorn (Diary) Wednesday, January 18th at 1:39PM EDT (link)

With all due respect you are clearly trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

Whatever the positive attributes of a particular piece of legislation he may have been involved in, Mitt Romney has a long and public record of chipping away at the base of the Second Amendment.

barleycorn is right on the mark

jkilgore1776 (Diary) Wednesday, January 18th at 1:53PM EDT (link)

Mitt Romney is a typical politician and panders to his audience at the time. All you have to do is search the internet for Romney and the second amendment and you will see. His answer in the last debate told the whole story. He is soft on the Second Amendment and people should realize that. If he were not he would have given the same answer he gave in a video to the NRA some years ago. Instead he gave a typical ‘guns are ok for hunting’ type analogy.

Newt

Lucas Black Tuesday, January 17th at 2:31PM EDT (link)

As much as I would like to see Newt win SC and at least give Romney a scare, I feel that the conservative vote will be too fractured for that to happen. Santorum and Perry will both draw supporters who might otherwise go for Newt and Romney will likely win, though perhaps not by a big margin. At that point the press will declare the race ‘over’ and move on.
Were Newt to win it, that would have some effect, but Romney still has all that money and would be very hard to knock off. I’m still hoping for a miracle, though. Sometimes one happens.
Rick Perry will almost certainly be gone next week, though. He’s not even leading the polls in Texas!

If Romney is Pro Gun?

dkolonia (Diary) Tuesday, January 17th at 2:43PM EDT (link)

He sure could have done a better job of showing it last night in my opinion. To contrast I was able to ask Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry about their support for the 2nd Amendment and they both gave very short black and white answers. Newt’s was, “The Constitution states you have the right to bear arms. That cannot be infringed upon, no matter what in any way.” That was an answer unlike Mitt’s last night.
That is good he did not allow any new gun regulations while Governor but he did not give a ringing endorsement of the 2nd Amendment when he had a golden opportunity to do so.

It kind of disappoints me too

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 17th at 2:50PM EDT (link)

It’s one of the things that worries me about his Presidency. He crafts his answers too much and shades his principles. In the past, in other locations, speaking before the NRA, he’s been very steadfast on the 2nd Amendment. I don’t know whether what he said last night constitutes going “wobbly” on that because I didn’t watch it.

To me, he should be very proud of his 2nd Amendment record in MA – in fact he should be more proud of it than almost anything else he did in Massachusetts as Governor. In truth it’s the best part of his record! Why he seems to be backing away from that a little now is an interesting question.

In other words

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, January 17th at 2:53PM EDT (link)

If I wanted to encourage Romney to do the right thing about the 2nd Amendment, I’d be telling him: “Listen: don’t shrink away from the good-to-great record you had in Massachusetts, for Pete’s sake. Celebrate that as much as you can.”

He did a good job here on the 2nd Amendment as governor. Everyone knew fees were going to go up – that’s how this state works! But in terms of *laws* he did a very good job. We should basically be demanding he defend his own good record in that regard, not trying to tear it down or misstate it.

You Can Tell...

dkolonia (Diary) Tuesday, January 17th at 3:18PM EDT (link)

It is plain to see that Mitt is not my choice in this race but of course I will support him if he wins the nomination. If he did a good job in MA on gun rights than I applaud him for that. I am from the South and we are looking for someone that gets to the point and clearly supports the 2nd Amendment without hesitation. As I said, in my opinion he fell far short of that last night. The question was served up to him on a silver platter and he could have knocked it out of the park but he did the opposite.
And just as with other positions what one person thinks as strong support another many not. His words sounded weak to me on the topic.

I Did Not Like His Answers on Guns and NDAA

jonsayer Wednesday, January 18th at 12:52AM EDT (link)

Been searching the internet for Mitt Romney’s views on gun control and the second amendment and find that it is not a real clear picture. Sometimes he voices strong support for the second amendment and at other times strong support for strict gun laws and the assault weapons ban.
His answer in the debate was not the best and his support for NDAA I don’t like at all.
Link I found on Romney and guns http://www.thepoliticalguide.com/Profiles/governor/Massachusetts/Mitt_Romney/views/The_Second_Amendment

Wish Perry had debated like this from the beginning. Clearly, he was not prepared well when he entered the race and it cost him.
Gingrich’s attacks on Bain will be nothing compared to what Obama will throw at him. He should release his tax return now so we get that out of the way.

jonsayer: Did you know that Perry had back surgery

pttx333 (Diary) Wednesday, January 18th at 2:40AM EDT (link)

in early July before he announced his run for President on August 13? Yes, it involved fusions and his own stem cells and, from what I understand, a very serious surgery. You are not supposed to stand for long periods (such as he was doing in debates) and there are very painful back spasms for months afterwards. I truly believe he was in such pain while debating that I don’t know how he has done what he has! He has improved from the surgery, but I’m sure there are still some lingering symptoms. He just never says anything about it, but will if asked.

He is a good, good man and a great Governor. I have voted for him all these years and will stand behind him all the way to the White House and beyond. No indecision in me on that – it is in stone.

Just thought I would let you know in case you didn’t. Thanks.

I'm Sick and Tired of Establishment RINO's

jcm9079 (Diary) Wednesday, January 18th at 3:13AM EDT (link)

Romney is an Establishment RINO. Is it SMART to vote for a guy that LOST to the guy (McCain) that LOST to Obama? I don’t think so. I am a diehard Reagan conservative. What happened to Reagan type of politicians? Very principled and proud of it. My wish is that Perry could somehow pull this out, (not holding my breath), if not him then Santorum and lastly Newt. Anybody but Romney, except Paul.

Our country is screwed if Romney wins the Republican nomination and ultimately the Presidency. Not as screwed as if Odumbo get re-elected, but screwed none the less, just at a slower rate. With all that being said, I will hold my nose and probably throw up in my mouth a little and vote for Romney if he is the nominee.

Oh well, I’m ready for a cleansing anyway. Are you? http://www.emergencyessentialsstore.co/

When Do We Call Out Obama on the 2nd Amendment?

Mike Merrill (Diary) Saturday, January 21st at 2:42AM EDT (link)

Instead of more infighting among conservatives on this issue, I’d love to see everyone calling out Obama on the 2nd Amendment. It seems like old news now, but Obama’s Executive Order (so he doesn’t have to get Congress to pass it) restricting sales of ‘long guns’ in border states is a direct violation of the 2nd Amendment.

In an effort to stem the illicit flow of weapons into Mexico, the Justice Department announced Monday that all gun shops in four Southwest border states will be required to alert the federal government to frequent buyers of high-powered rifles.
Under the new policy, federal firearms licensees in Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico must report purchases of two or more of some types of rifles by the same person in a five-day span. The requirement applies to purchases of semi-automatic rifles that have detachable magazines and a caliber of greater than .22.

So it’s okay for Eric Holder to sell machine guns to Mexican drug lords, but it’s not ok for gun shops in border states to comply with the 2nd Amendment. What’s wrong with this picture?

Check out my new book Leadership Lessons of a Campaigner-in-Chief — How to hoodwink voters, sidestep the Constitution and expand government bureaucracy.

Hopefully, when Issa Indicts him and he is thrown in jail! ;)

snowshooze (Diary) Saturday, January 21st at 2:53AM EDT (link)

Sell guns to drug cartels? No. Buy them for them it was… and drive them across the border too I would bet. With an escort!
Honestly, I cannot understand why anyone could ignore a subpoena, or lie to Congress and get off with it… but here we are.
