The Abolition of RedState

or, scoring an own goal

I have to rewrite this diary because I lost the long text after rebooting for the third time. I have attempted to sign in and post probably 30 times tonight. I no longer have the interest to go into the detail of my last attempt so I will keep this short and sour.

As far as I am concerned, Redstate 3.0 is a collosal failure. The site is unusable because it is so hard to log in, so hard to post, and so hard to have a conversation/debate. There have been countless posts on the problems with the new site, and even more posts defending the “hard work” of the designer. What it comes down to is this site is no longer reliable and is NOT “the place for important Republicans to post”.

When long term users can’t even log in, how do we expect a Congressman or his LA to spend the time attempting to make a diary? Some say our traffic has increased and that is the problem, if true, I will eat my hat. I have not checked website statistics, but I have seen the absurd amount of time and tenacity it takes to log on, stay logged on, and be able to make any post at all. Just to post this diary I refreshed about 40 times and rebooted my computer three times.

It is sad that for whatever reason, this site has scored an “own goal” prior to the election of our lives. Here is some straight talk, in no way does this site compare to Daily Krud, except for content. The site just does not work. Yes, 2.0 had its problems, but it was also a close community. Erick should have polled the long term users for improvement ideas and then hired a professional to make the site better. Instead, we have lost many regulars who don’t think errors and refreshing are that enjoyable. We have lost our chance to be the conservative opposition to Daily Krud.

I also think the camaraderie of the site is gone. I remember long debates and conversations with the likes of Moe, GC, Mbecker, Jaded, EPU, Haystack, and even Erick Dondero. Now I can’t even log in, stay logged in, or get any help dealing with this site. I guess I was never part of the “in” crowd, but at least there was a group that cared. Now I can’t get help from anyone here or the directors.

But this diary is not about me. Other than the fact that I spent almost three years here and feel now a stranger at my own site. We now have a chat room where 90 percent of my posts are not approved, and half the people with unlimited access I have never even heard of. They certainly were not active even one year ago.

But the main point is not about my personal complaints, my diary is about how this site has regressed. We were never the most trafficked site, but we did have a place of honor, a place where Republcan Reps posted. Now we have a site harder to access than the Whopper of “War Games” fame.

I have a lot more to say but since I doubt this thing will even post, I will let it go. To those who have been “net friends” I say thank you. I have not posted much lately because of the reasons stated. If I am not banned for this diary, I will look forward to seeing you guys again at RedState 4.0. But again, I am flabergasted that we did this to our site on the eve of the most important election of our lives. I will stay involved in Republican politics, but I am not going to sit at my computer and refresh and reboot all night just to make a comment. Maybe someone did “work hard” to make 3.0, but if it was a victory in any sense, it was pyrrhic.

Hi Doc, it is hard to post, but

Tim_Schieferecke Saturday, September 6th at 10:44PM EDT (link)

I’m not so sure there isn’t something nefarious going on with the manipulation of servers or something. I know next to nothing about computer technology, but I do know it was much easier to post even one week ago than it is now. 3.0 worked well during the D convention and for several open thread discussions. Is it possible that some outside forces are manipulating the site’s servers? Again, I know next to nothing about computer tech, and I don’t want folks to think I’ve got a tin foil cap, but 3.0 did work at first.

Sorry to say it, but I don’t come to site anymore, I just get the RSS’s in my mail… Logging in, writing a diary, posting comments, are all pretty much impossible! As of late, the the site is causing so many duplicate post that I have given serious considerstion to deleting the RSS feed… Now is NOT the time for this site be as lame as it is. I have not been happy since day one of 3.0, and have waited patiently. Can we please have 2.0 back? With 60 days left to go, now is not the time for us to be working out the bugs.

It is ludicrous that this is happening on a SATURDAY NIGHT!

bs Saturday, September 6th at 11:28PM EDT (link)

It’s been several days since the Drudge thing, and RedState is still profoundly broken…virtually unusable. In fact, I’ll be shocked if I do NOT get a 500 error when posting this comment. I’ve tried posting numerous comments over the last 5-7 days, and a fraction of them have made it onto the site.

The question is: what is being done to fix it?? All I hear is crickets (figuratively and literally - they’re going outside as I type…)

As you say, this is NOT the time for such horrid performance and behavior. The convention and the upcoming 60-day dash are precisely the time that the conservative/GOP team needs to be able to communicate, share, etc. And at this point, RedState is completely unable to provide that capability.

Sad, really.

Isn’t there something that can be done to add capacity/capability to handle this? If we can’t handle a Drudgealanche, we’ve some serious problems getting the message out, and that’s what this site is about, isn’t it?

Given the absence of the RS Powers all afternoon and evening, I am guessing that something is underway. Emergency meetings and chats, reversion to 2.0 trial runs, log analysis, investigations into DoS traffic, working with authorities on said investigations…. something! I know some of the contributors and directors have experienced and read about what is going on now- well after the Drudge Effect.

Meanwhile, I am catching up on the latest in content management and community managements systems. This does need to be remedied. For the sake of the country, because the stakes are high- and the country needs RedState. But also for the sake of this community and its future.

I wouldn;t worry too much, yet.

phxg Sunday, September 7th at 12:30AM EDT (link)

I know about internet traffic and its’ impact upon server nodes. If you want to get a feel for the total onslaught that RS is taking right now look at the previous 12 months of traffic (here).

You will notice that the 6 days in Sept 08 the site has more traffic then 7 of the 12 previous full months. As the amount of new exposure RS has had in the past 1-2 weeks there is just a lot of people coming here. Looking at the Sitemeter projections using the last month of data, we should expect RS to get 2,361,787 visits. This is 34% increase over August’s high of 1.55MM visits. That is an amazing amount of growth for any website barring a site built to handle many times that volume.

If we look at the previous 7 days notice that the amount of traffic has dropped of considerably. This is what concerns me. While I know nothing about the underlying database design and query structure, in a normal environment the drop in traffic the site should have recovered. There could be database corruption by way of too many malformed fields or even possibly the execution of malicious code by way of the posting function. That would be troubling because it would signal a major error in the site program.

Hopefully, it’s a simple fix of upgrading the dedicated database servers and improving the load balancers. But that still takes some time to figure out the best repair. I wouldn’t get too worked up, YET because we all know the main man, Erick was just up in MSP, and Neil has made some comments here about working towards a solution.

7 vs 30

Adam C Sunday, September 7th at 12:44AM EDT (link)

Looking at the last 7 days is very misleading.

Look at the last 30. Our “normal” day is 50,000 visits. All through the DNC, we hit around there. Then came Obama acceptance night on that Thursday:

H: 100,000 (Obama’s speech)
F: 160,000 (Palin’s selection)
S: 150,000
S: 240,000 (Drudge link on caleb video)
M: 170,000
T: 260,000 (Fred Thompson speech)
W: 140,000 (Palin speech)
H: 260,000 (McCain speech)
F: 90,000
S: 50,000

As you can see, looking at the last 7 days alone looks like a huge drop off. Really, we had a massive spike from 1) Caleb’s video of the DNC Chair that got drudged from 12 hours and 2) RNC coverage.

We are now back to normal usage. I’m not saying that will fix the “500″ errors. But we did not experience a massive drop off in the last few days. We regressed to the mean.

MrMosis Sunday, September 7th at 12:53AM EDT (link)

Hopefully the words “SQL Injection” have nothing to do with what has been going on.

My main concern has been the fact that at times when the traffic should have dropped off to near nothing, the response times were not where they should be. So my worry has been- surely simple fixes have been tried. Why have they not worked? Bad data in the database from the times when the site was experiencing the Drudge Effect would be preferable to malicious activity, for sure. If that is part or all of the problem, maybe some better data constraints can be put in place for next time Matt Drudge finds news here.

And I have complete faith in Neil to sort it out.

So while I don;t share the jump ship feelings others may have, my concern is that the 500 error makes our site look cheesy and 2nd rate during a crucial election period when it is absolutely not true.

And besides, after all the debate and in fighting we all went through just to get to this point (I’m sure I don;t need to remind you of that one big one about the upside down McCain pics) I am certain that many centrist visitors will be convinced to vote McCain based on what we can present.

I’ve tried to stay quiet about RS 3.0 because we were told the problems were being resolved…but seeing all of these comments brings up a question.

It was made pretty clear at the beginning that the budget was limited. Eagle Publishing put in a decent share and RedState did fundraising for the rest. Therefore, the issue with upgrades and fixes could be money.

If that is the case (and I have no inside info, this is pure guesswork), would you be willing to put up more funds to finance the improvements?

Frustration for Weeks Logging In Etc. - Suggestions

Strelnikov Sunday, September 7th at 6:42AM EDT (link)

Last night I wrote to the webmaster describing the problems outlined above: error messages, inability to log in or see comments, etc. They have been present for the past 2 weeks, but became terrible last night.

I am amazed that this morning everything - so far -seems perfect!

Suggestions for the future: it would be nice to have a feature where people could send private messages to each other via RedState. Many other similar conversation sites have that.

Since so many people visit, it would also be nice to have a larger list of recent comments with the names of the authors: the current method seems not so good for finding a specific person quickly.

A list of members would also be useful, with the dates of their last visits and comments.

As of November 4, 2008, the Code Words will be: “Klaatu - Borada - Nikto!”

Cut Neil a Break

George Claghorn Sunday, September 7th at 7:19AM EDT (link)

I know that there are a lot of problems with 3.0, but let’s stop blaming everything on Neil. He has a thankless job running this site and it looks like he’s been working as hard as he can. Remember: he’s only one guy and he only has two hands to type with.

I’m just as frustrated as everyone else, as I haven’t been able to log in for the last week, but I do think that we should focus on the issues that matter. We should leave the code cleanup and troll blamming to Neil and Moe (respectively) and just focus on the important stuff.

There’s always The Minority Report and a lot of other good blogs out there for you to read while waiting for your comment to be posted.

Already, I’ve noticed the site speeding up just a little bit. (When I went to preview this comment, I didn’t have to wait 28 minutes!) Just be patient and things start to get better.

“Victory comes, though we know not when. We must be happy warriors until the end.

I have found michellemalkin.com as an excellent venue to read while waiting for RS pages to load or come back with ISE 500 errors. MM has gotten many more libs posting in the last week, with some articles having over 400 comments when they use to get 100 max. Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to register on MM to make a comment. There are no links to register on the site. Has anyone figured out how?

Also, can you see how many times your diary has been viewed on RS 3.0?

It’s not oxygen, it’s blood. When the blood runs out, you die. Redstate needs a tranfusion, quick.

My other advice was given privately to one of the Editor/Contributors last night and is not NOT suitable for reproduction in a family forum. But prognostication and kicking and screaming by itself, and pointing fingers from the Peanut Gallery isn’t going to be enough to change the situation: it requires some mutual good will. I have always found Redstate to be valuable to me personally, and anyone else who has felt the same way should dispense with the animosity and kick in what they can.

I’m quite sure the people watching the site and the metrics are becoming well aware of what is causing the slow performance. My educated guess is that it is going to take money to fix.

Think of it as an investment, and promise to pay, but not to count the costs. Fingers crossed. In the scheme of things, it’s much better to have Redstate get out of cardiac arrest even if we have to pay for the heart transplant and the transfusions.

Let us endeavor in some teamwork and and upgrade/repair/rebuild/secure our house.

Then why is it just as bad as it was last Wednesday?

bs Sunday, September 7th at 4:43PM EDT (link)

Either your hit stats are wrong or something got broke during the onslaught that has yet to be repaired. At 1am this morning, response time was just as poor as it was in the middle of the week. I received just as many 500 errors, and today it’s just as bad, if not worse.

To address a couple of other items:

1) To kowalski’s point - if I had some indication from the RS powers-that-be that there was some action pending to fix this mess, then I WOULD donate some more $. But just throwing money out there with no stated plan of action - no, not doing it.
2) To George’s point about Neil - no one has said Neil’s name in this entire thread, that I saw. There’s nothing personal towards anyone here. From what I understand, RS was given a pretty poor batch of code and it’s been cobbled and hacked to get it to the point where it is now, which is saying a lot considering where it started. Unfortunately, it’s not enough.

Now I’ll click “Post Comment” and fully expect to have to re-do it 3 or 4 times before it “takes” (after copying and saving the text so it doesn’t get lost when the inevitable 500 error occurs)

I agree with the commenters who have suggested this. Web site attacks are a specialty of the Obama campaign who used it against Hillary supporters during the primaries. That is very likely in this case.

"The 500"

That’s my nickname for Redstate.com, because that’s what I usually see when I attempt to post: “500 Internal Server error.”

8th attempt. This is just silly

Post attempt #5

scottbomb Monday, September 8th at 3:57PM EDT (link)

I wrote a brilliant response to this thread a few hours ago but it was eaten by the 500 error monster. Oh well, most of my brilliance has been channeled to others who have posted here.

At least this time I copied my post to notepad so I can copy/paste it in my attempts to post this one. This is my 4th attempt this time around.

I don’t think Redstate uses persistent cookies (is that the right term?) because I keep having to log in. Changing that alone would take a load off the 80286-based server Eagle seems to be using.

I know some people put up good money for 3.0 (I chipped in a measly $25 but I also make pennies compared to some around here). I’m amazed that the most crippling problems have lasted as long as they have. If Redstate wants to be taken seriously, it must be able to withstand a Drudge link. I’m willing to bet KOS doesn’t have that problem.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Redstaters become whiners. I love this site for the reasons most of you do. I’ll just wait.. and wait..for things to iron out. They are working on it. If I can’t post then I read because it’s really hard to read everything that is posted here because of all the diaries especially now. Sooo much info and sooo little time.

How’s that for spin?

BTW, doc, I tried to contact you re the live blog on final nite of the RNC , to tell you that all non-contributors were having the same problem, but the site kept crashing so I never found your contact info.

Stay cool.

specialist, what is up with this?

You keep posting this link in thread after thread, but it’s nothing but a “mailto” link. What is your point?

I've got to be honest here ...

Leverkuhn Tuesday, September 9th at 2:24PM EDT (link)

… I feel for Doc Holliday, but I simply don’t understand the problem. I am a “long time user” (about 5 years) just as he is, and I never have trouble logging on. Perhaps it’s a computer problem that he’s experiencing but not others?

I don't support this

Doc, you know I’m your friend, but I am not down with this. The current crap is indeed crap, but there are no easy magic wands to wave. It is difficult, and frustrating, and counter-productive, all that.

This is where we are, and bitching is indicated, but not the bunny rabbit.

Which bunny rabbit, you say? Glad you asked…..

is your opinion. I find the bunny rabbit an afront. If you are going to make light of my diary, at least use the bunny with a pancake on its head!

it is possible Lever

but I doubt my diary would be on the rec list if it was simply a personal computer problem. The diary was not flooded with reccos, but those who did are names I know and respect.

I know I never said anyones name. I am just stating what I have experienced. I tried the 3.0 beta and was lost there. I stayed at 2.0 until it was taken down. When I was forced to go to 3.0, it never worked. People can talk about the “last couple weeks”, “the Drudge Effect”, and internet activity all they want. I am not a net geek (meant in a positive way), I just know the site has seemed to me to be a fiasco. I hope this changes, I have no ill will towards anyone here, I just question the methods and the results.

We are whiners?

Doc Holliday Tuesday, September 9th at 9:59PM EDT (link)

sorry, I miss your attempt at humor or your personal attack. Here is one back at ya, I have never even heard of you, and I have been here a lot longer than you have. We are not whiners dear, we are RedStaters concerned about a serious problem.

And to the Directors, you know I have been on good terms with you, I can cite Moe mostly, but also Neil and Erick. I would not have posted this if not for severe concerns about a site I care about.

Also, I would give money if I saw a prospectus. If this site is going towards a read only site, count me out.

btw, things are working better tonight :)

Sorry my friend

I actually could not locate the bunny-pancake-head image - even though, like you say, that was more appropo.

Seriously, I’m just saying that we all know and suffer as well, and there is plenty of venting. The most damning statement of all that you make (and with which I agree) is it seems the camaraderie has taken a big hit, and all the names we are used to seeing and bantering with, many seem to be replaced by people we don’t really know. That is the toughest pill of them all. [and FWIW, and this is positively evil to say, a good number of at least my own crowd currently hang out fairly regularly at TMR]

But you are talking about taking a hike until better times. And I just really don’t want you to do it and I don’t want you to talk about doing it. The camaraderie is much more difficult now, but still can be there if WE the OLD GUARD continue to stick in here, take our lumps, and communicate.

So since you simply won’t abide the bunny, I leave you to deal with the consequences of your misdeeds, and face the steely gaze of Pete, the Prince of Darkness:

given pride of place in these chats while long term RedStater’s are treated like peasants begging for crumbs? I am waiting for a director to come to this reccomended diary and explain a few things. I think their complete disregard speaks volumes.

We do not have the stay at this site. The internet is a market place of ideas. People keep saying be patient, but patient for what exactly? to be treated like yesterdays news? I respect the directors, but if this is going to be a read only site, there are better ones. The directors are great, but they do not compare to the collective abilities of the average RedStater’s .

I will not keep this up long, because we will either get clued in or not. this diary is a call out, we are still waiting for an explanation. If one is given, then I bet we will rally behind the site. If our concerns are ignored, then this site will be ignored, capiche?

Before 3.0 I Was Here

patriotroom Thursday, September 11th at 9:13AM EDT (link)

nearly every day, and though I have not been in this community nearly as long as others, RS 3.0 has been an astonishing disappointment to me. I think I posted one of the first diaries after the switch over and it stayed on the Recommended Diary list for about 3 weeks (the diary was good, but not that good). The site was obviously screwed up and then the loading problems started. I have basically stopped visiting the site as a result of the bugs in 3.0. I still read it, but the drastic difference between my before/after involvement happens as of 3.0’s birthday.

Thanks Doc for posting this

I did not want to say anything as I am relatively new to RedState. I completely fell in love with the site and the folks here after joining several months ago, and this has been my constant as far as political blogging goes. I was an avid poster and diarist and felt better connected and informed after having spent some time here.
After switching to the new format I tried to give some adjustment time, but I too have continued to have problems. I get error pages several times/day, I find the site to be not quite as user friendly, I notice the recommends stay forever.
I am a little disappointed and hope the kinks get worked out soon, so we can all continue to be a part of this “virtual community”and continue to share our ideas and information with friends here.

I am amazed that this morning everything - so far -seems perfect!

In the stock market, that would be known as a bear trap. I was caught by one the other day, too.

But things are going swimmingly right now.

One other unfortunate side effect of the multiple problems is that one is tempted to forego the “preview comment” and go straight to “post comment.”
