MEMBER DIARY

Where are all the new Conservative Bloggers

Probably at Work

I am awe inspired by the many people on RedState that can find the time to write their diaries. My hat’s off to each and everyone of you that can read all of the headlines and dig deep into the story to find the details that the MSM misses or fails to highlight. I am also very impressed by the level of detail that some of the posters at RedState get into.

I have tried many times to write a diary entry that would be well thought out, detailed and researched and found myself running out of time and leaving it for another day only to find that another day has come and gone and new ideas have caught my attention.

That has led me to this point that I felt I would discuss. I spend many of my days and nights working on systems engineering documentation for the many programs that I am currently working on. My God, family, country, work, and sanity are my priorities in order right now in my life; however, my interest in getting my ideas and concerns in regards to the current U.S. political discourse are of ever increasing priority since the election of 2008, yet I am still at a loss for time to produce diaries worth reading or even getting to the front page. So am I alone here?

I have no children right now, but I want many. I want to be able to father a new generation of Conservatives steeped in the values that I hold dear, and give them the information to make it in this country like I have. Unfortunatly, for people like me, we find ourselves caught in the minute details of family, faith, mental health and career that our conservative and civics knowledge go unshared with those that I interact with on a daily basis or with those looking to learn by visiting this site. Again, is this a reason why the internet blogosphere is run by the liberals and not by conservatives? I certainly find it hard to spend time producing some of the diaries that I would like to create. Again, I always seem to be engaging in all of those other priorities listed above. Is this why the conservatives are not as prominent on the internet as their liberal counterparts are? When things get bad is that the only time you will here more from us vociferously challenged conservatives?

Many times I will pick up Physics/Engineering Journals or Textbooks to further my knowledge of my field of study rather than write on the politics of the day, but that is what many of my conservative colleagues do as well. I can only provide reassurance that when you start seeing more people like me enter the blogosphere, we have entered because our career can no longer take priority over the direction of the country. I just hope it will not be too late.

Lastly, to let everyone know and be reassured, there are many intelligent conservative thinkers out there who share your principles and can prove everyone of them to an extent that is almost air-tight to a logical thinker (except things relating to faith); however, many of us will hand snippets of information in the little time we have to do so. So please do not crush us with harsh critiques because our diary is short, because many of us want to contribute without hijacking a thread, and remember we have much to add.

For politics, I’m here at RS…. I’m on a NRA related forum (small membership) and just registered to comment on H/A. Every so often, I’ll also run up a comment on Pamela Geller’s site (Atlas).

Other than that, who has the time to deal with all ?

What I’m finding sad and extremely scary is that allot of the blog sites and out-of-USA media outlets are the getting to be the only places where you can find hard news of real importance.

If it weren’t for Fox News Channel and Fox Business Channel, TV news would very well be a total unchecked assault on our freedom.

I suspect, I am with you on the only news outlets reliable are FNC and FBC. Other than that your best bet is to read as many sources as you can get your hands on and make sure they are republishing AP material, which foxnews.com has been doing away with but all of the other news sights still rely on AP.

Lastly, time is at a premium for me right now until my contract is up then time may be too much on my side for blogging.

I have a day job also, like probably 80% of the folks here. I spend an increasing amount of my spare time reading stuff here, following mailing lists, Twitter, other blogs, RSS feeds of news stories, etc. And that’s just the political stuff. I also try to keep up on the other “side” of my interests, which is theology and church-related items. Fortunately (wrt. the time thing), my sons are older and don’t require much “dad time” any more (a mixed blessing, I must admit), so I do have more time for this.

I just went back over your diary list, and you have some great stuff out there. Some of us spend more than just a few minutes working on longer diaries…very few folks can just crank one out in one sitting. For me, it’s sometimes like what writing a school paper used to be – create an outline (at least mental), do the research, collect the refs, and write the sucker, including a rough and final draft. Other folks just pound out a diary in a few minutes. Everyone’s different.

As far as the short ones go, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect that a diarist write at least a couple of paragraphs. Just dropping a link into a diary and writing “check this out” is not really a great way to do it. I believe our crack technical team is looking at alternate ways to post brief entries. I envision it as something akin to Twitter, but that remains to be seen. Those of us who post to the front page need to be more diligent about providing open threads for the more brief entries that folks want to share.

Thanks for your efforts and contributions to the community in the short time you’ve been here.

One of the problems, the challenges, of being conservative is this: we have day jobs, we have lives, we are busy being who we are. Political matters matter a great deal to us, but often are bumped to the back burner.

On the other side, politics is the religion of a whole bunch of lefties. Politics is about power to them, and it is about governance to us.

Like you, it is an effort for me to cook up a diary of substance. I am afraid that my reputation at RedState far exceeds my actual production (OK, actually a good problem to have, on balance), and most of the times that I do put out something substantial, it has come at the expense of sleep, family time, and other personal responsibilities.

So hang in there, and pick your battles. One excellent diary per month is something that can be achieved, and beats 5-6 sloppy ones.

I was really beginning to think I was alone in my inabiity to write diaries in a reasonable amount of time because time seems to be at a premium. I could not agree more with the link and a sentence.

If you are like me, another day goes by and something else gets your attention and you will write about that something like Adult ADD. I have about 4 narratives started, hopefully in the next month I will be able to wrap them up.

I have no life, it should work out. Just don’t expect quality.

  • DONTREADONME

says I can do more than 1 a month, but the little realist in me says nope you will be lucky to produce a good one in a month.

I would definitly say your one of those people that I have noticed hammering out those quality diary entries that are often quite well received and stir some intense comments on a regular basis. That first paragraph of my diary was pretty much referencing you, Erik, Achance, GC, that guy that hammers out three and four front pagers in a row and others.

So I can not wait to get that first well researched entry out there that I have been working on now since I joined. Unfortunately, my numerical analysis of the population shift from the blue states to the red states is taking a lot longer than I would have hoped. I am trying to prove that the blue staters have brought their politics to the red states and are slowly whithering away the prosperity those states enjoyed through the application of liberal governance. (e.g. North Carolina and Virginia, from my numbers GA may be next…Yikes!)

I just don’t have the time now. 2 jobs, school, kids, travel, etc. By the time I get to sit down I’m too tired to do much of anything.
