MEMBER DIARY

2 pounds of Ham, at $595,600 a pound

Promoted from the diaries. We’d assume that this was some sort of data entry error, but then again, we have no reason to believe that at all. It is, after all, government ham.

UPDATE by Erick: The contract calls for nearly 800,000 lbs of ham sliced in 2 lb pieces. I’d bump this back off the front page, but am running into a technical problem doing that. Nonetheless, the contract appears legitimate.

I give up. I freaking give up. I tried to sit on the fence, reserve judgement. I tried to be a lefty among right wingers, a righty among left wingers. I told myself, hey, RedState is just as crazy as the Daily Kos, two sides of the same coin. I told myself that I’d give Obama a year before I made any judgment. But ham is now $1.1 million a pound, which changes everything. You guys win. This is wack.

    Front page!

I did get the math wrong – in my eagerness to post, I said 1.1 million per pound however the title has the correct amount. Which clearly makes all of the difference.

I don’t believe that I can. The true shame in this is that I am but inches away from a degree in mathematics.

Yay government. Can’t wait until they bring that kind of cost savings to health care! Not to mention 2 months to slice and deliver it too.

  • benwhite72

But seriously, it is REALLY hard to slice ham when it’s frozen.

And how do we know it’s the ame?

      • pliny

the contract number. Same firm, same date, same amount of money. And yes, 2lb ham, sliced. But 760,000 lb.

anyone else noticed what a bad buying decision it was? Why not get the 3;b ham, which is clearly a better value?

    • bs

Note Leon’s diary promotion notes. We thought it was good for the humor factor.

      • randy streu

I like this whole “transparency” idea, but they have to learn to do it right. It’s not as though, in THIS government, 1/2million-dollar-a-pound ham is totally OUTSIDE the realm of possibility.

        • bs

that that’s how much ham should cost.

          • 6eorge Jetson

The thieves are that stupid so as to try to get away with this. But there was a non-zero chance that the workflows somehow generated an unintended artifact before it could be covered up.

Why is there none of the fine cured Virginia ham on that schedule of purchases? Is there some sort of discriminatory action takinh place?

I would like Gov. Tim Kaine (D) to investogate this. Of course, he would actually need to in Richmond doing the work he was elected to do, and not flying around the country in his role as DNC Chair.

Oh and Gov. Tim … release your travel records for public review.

and $1,000,000 in advisory/outreach fees to CAIR after they complained that our being involved with the filthy pig the ham came from was offensive to US Muslims.

The Holy Ham will be distributed to the worshippers of a demi-god named “Socialism” under the instruction of its Highest Priest, Obama, the One.

Emergency = Selected “few” poor people EXCELLENT for D’s photoshoots.

Pay your taxes for the next gazillion years: Send the IRS two pounds of sliced ham!

    • Brian Johnson

The amazing rate of tax increase we can expect with this bunch. At Bush rates, yeah, it would cover the next gazillion years. With our coming tax increases, I think it’ll only cover the next 5 or 6.

      • muffin

I forgot to include the O-flation factor and the exponentially increasing O-taxes. My bad.

  • littlel

When you are living large like the Obama’s (on the Taxpayers Credit Card)you expect the very best–hence 500K Hams, 7K handbags and $600 sneakers–but when eating Ham is against your religion–why worry as long as there is an adaquate Arugla supply. Chow down everyone-but only if you voted for Barry–if not “No Soup for YOU”–or as it is now reffered to–
    No Stimulis Money for You!

  • leftylurker

My bid to slice the ham for $968,408 was deemed “not credible” and I lost the contract.

    • muffin

Remember, Biden said we must spend more money so we don’t go bankrupt.

Let’s hope it’s not long pig.

  • bk

$1.2M for two months spent slicing hams. WHAT THE HELL is this doing coming of “stimulus” money? Making up a number, let’s say this employed 100 people for the TWO MONTHS of this project’s life. Does Obama count that as 100 jobs created even though they went away after two months? And if they moved on to some other part-time “stimulus” project for two more months after that, does that count as another 100 jobs created, bumping Obama’s total to 200 jobs? What a racket!!

  • portabello77

When we claim without evidence that two pounds of ham cost a million, because we want to hurt the opponent, we lose credibility. Let’s keep it accurate.

    • portabello77

      I meant.

    • bs

The story reported the site as it read. The inaccuracy was in the cited page.

      • bs

I would be happy to email you a PDF printout of the site as it was when the diary was promoted. Apparently someone has now updated the page to remove the item description.

Of course it is a government website, so I suppose that may be intentional.

    Click “Manage”.

    Select this Diary.

    Select the HTML tab.

Copy the link that is your opening paragraph.

Write a NEW opening paragraph, select an appropriate word to use as a link to the story and highlight it. Then, using the “link” thingy, paste your copied link into the pop-up.

Doing that will make seeing what you want us to see significantly easier. Thank you.

    Contract entered 28 April 2009 ; completed 30 June 2009.

That’s right….. My people ordered the ham to help bankrupt America for sending us Hillary, George Mitchell, Harold Koh and Samantha Power.

I just edited my latest diary – I screwed up the subtitle first time around. Caught it and went back in and edited it.

I’m guessing that whoever did the promotion did the HTML edit to this one because it’s fixed now.

  • http://curiousmojo.blogspot.com/ Patrick McGarry

Sheesh, with prices like that you’d think cap and trade was already law. Either that or Barack likes to glaze his hame with pure Colombian blow.

it worked, but I still got a warning that it wasn’t allowed.

How do you do a subtitle now?

  • Leon H. Wolf

Those cost more than regular hams you know.

  • mbecker908

really good bacon for you. Top quality. Peppered. And I can do a deal for you at just $1,375 a pound including shipping. Overnight in dry ice. Twenty five pounds minimum order.

And if you’re interested, I can probably get you a distributorship for all the synagogues in your area. Waffles and bacon are really good fundraisers and if there’s many Catholics in your area, you can modify the waffle iron and play bingo while they eat. HUGE moneymaker.

Who believe $18M to redo the recovery.gov website is necessary. Sadly, after the taxy-spendy crowd spend all the money they’re chomping at the bit to spend, this will probably be the price all Americans will be paying for 2 lbs of ham.

Also, apparently there were 2 months between the effective contract date and its completion. 2 months to slice 2 lbs of ham? Must be the same folks who run the deli at our local grocery store here.

And was that job saved after they took 2 months to slice the ham? If not, it would explain why it took so long.

I miss my younger days when I could laugh at jokes about $10,000 hammers and toilet seats in government. Now such stories make me get in the fetal position and cry like a little girl.
