Why is Mitt Romney still standing by and letting Obama carpet bomb him?

I have an earlier post last week that states why I am perplexed watching the Olympics in Western Nebraska.  My satellite feed of local channels, and so the Olympics comes from Denver.  As such, I see lots of presidential television advertising.  For another week Mitt Romney seems to be getting killed and carpet bombed by the Democrats and their liberal/socialist ilk.  How is this happening?  I know that the Romney folks seem to think that they can wait until after the convention, I think they cannot.  I think this carpet bombing is having an effect of stopping the ability of the campaign to influence the types of voters watching the Olympics.  Due to the diaspora of television viewing, even the debates might not attract the kind of viewership that the Olympics will, and the Romney folks are ceding the battlefield.

Furthermore, what is distressing is all the low hanging fruit that the administration is giving us:

To wit, why aren’t we running ads on the stimulus/”Porkulus” program and the ideological nightmare that is?  Why don’t we hit them on the issue of the stimulus and the wasted money by the liberals?  That would be a major part of our president’s record that should be brought back into focus.

Second, Why isn’t there a healthcare ad on describing the nightmare of Obamacare?  All you need to do is get a small businessman or businesswoman on television showing how it is an unsustainable tax increase, then get a doctor on to demonstrate how it interferes with the doctor-patient relationship.

Third, run a Solyndra ad and contrast that with the responsible Keystone XL pipeline, which the president is unilaterally blocking.  And demonstrate the effect that the liberal environmentalist movement is destroying America’s prosperity.  Besides, demonstrate that most of the people trying to run the EPA are limousine  liberals, that want we the people to give up our way of life?

The recent welfare ad is good.  We need to go a lot further.  We need to become ideological warriors about the election.  If we call the Democratic Party out on the carpet we can win this campaign.  We will not win being nice people.  We will win by attacking them on what they are.  We cannot win by hoping that the leftist people will fall in line and conduct an honest campaign.  That does not mean we lie.  All it means is we go into the dark corners of the liberal point of view that have been on display this last year and hit them hard.  And Romney has the cash.  The so-called conservative Super-Pacs have the resources also.  We need to use them now.  Let’s strike now, while the iron is hot!

John Podhoretz of Commentary is saying Romney’s campaign isnt working:
    http://www.commentarymagazine.com/2012/08/10/romneys-strategy-isnt-working/

I share the sense of frustration that we have a campaign that should be on offense, and should be taking it to Obama on point after point … but is completely failing to do so. The Romney strategy is the typical RINO campaign strategy – I’ve been in these – and they are often pathetic attempts to win by offending nobody (which means run a very boring and unappealing campaign that says almost nothing memorable). Romney’s failure to says anything about Chick-fil-A, when chik-fil-a has 61% support – is telling.

Obama is corrupt, Obama is dishonest, Obama is a leftist on cultural issues, Obama is a leftist on Government power … all these arguments could be made, and should be made.

Romney needs to expose Obama … Here is one attempt:

    http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2012/08/romney-ad-challenges-obamas-character.php

Obama will say anything even lie to get re-elected … Good but wish we would be hitting even harder.

But even more important than going after Obama is defending his own honor and painting a very clear picture of what ordinary americans will get from Romney administration.

      What a waste.

And I was a Romney supporter.

We just finished the Olympics and the public is not looking at politics right now.

I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that when the time comes Romney will blast Obama. He is a ruthless politician who can smell victory. There is no reason to doubt.

      • Viet71

        Romney will blast Obama?

        When?

        • tacotuesdays

Ask Newt and Santorum if Romney can fight.

You must have forgotten that Newt led Romney by double digits using the same attacks that Obama is using on Mitt now, but where is Newt now? After Romney was through with him there was hardly enough left of Newt to scrape off of the floor.

Don’t underestimate the man. You don’t make 250 million dollars by being a nice guy.

It is both untrue and wrong to suggest “No one” is paying attention to the extent that campaigning and making a case is pointless.

        Of course NOT.

We just saw a campaign take 2 years to come to fruition (Ted Cruz). Less than 90 days out, Romney CAN take it to Obama, and less than 90 days Obama IS taking it to Romney spending millions on ad, that are having an impact on the campaigns obviously … Obama has a specific strategy – to define Romney NOW so badly that Romney cant even catch up in the fall, being as he is a felon and murderer and jobkilling plutocrat tax dodger, the voters will vote for the incompetent with 8% unemployment.

So, even if you are right that people are tuned out, they ARE getting messages and Romney needs to be in the mix – hitting STRONG on who he is and Obama is.

“He is a ruthless politician who can smell victory. There is no reason to doubt.”

This must be a different Romney they are keeping in an undisclosed location.

Maybe it is a blessing that the polls show Obama ahead. These guys thought they could just run on the economy and let the monthly numbers do the campaigning for them – but its not enough. Let him make the ideological case for freedom and against Obama’s socialism and I’ll be a believer. UNtil then, I’ll stick with my thesis that they are running a too-timid RINO-style dont-say-too-much-to-get-hurt campaign that will LOSE the race if we dont get more aggressive …

        • PowerToThePeople

but Romney funds are quite low as to what is regulated as spendable prior to convention.

Right now, Obama has a huge advantage in the spending area as he can spend what he wants. Our convention is in just a few more weeks and then Romney can start spending the hundreds of millions he has accumulated. Until then, best thing he can do now is make the right VP choice, announce that choice next week, attend the convention and get tons of more money, then once he is free to spend, get all over Obama.

Until then, we and he just have to wait.

          • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

They dont need big ad buys, but they DO need to get the campaign off defense and on to offence. This is at least encouragng sign they will hit Obama on more than economy …

      • http://impudent.edublogs.org/ kyle8

Whatever else he may be Romney is a pretty damn good politician, I will trust him and his team.

      • Bill S

That’s one thing that has bothered me ever since I signed on at Redstate. Everyone assumes that the whole country is as politically attuned as we are, and it simply is not true.

After school starts and vacations and the Olympics are over, I think that’ll change.

  • civil truth

The Obama campaign is hoping to trap the Romney campaign into overreacting. Romney knows that the press “referees” are on Obama’s team, so they have to employ different tactics than past campaigns. Most folk are not really following the campaigns in the middle of summer vacation. Romney is not McCain.

Anyway, we’re just along for the ride, so enjoy it – or not. And trust that the American people will see through the obfuscation and recognized what’s at stake.

  • demsaresatanic

has done so far which looks better than what was done by McCain.

money raised for the general election can only be used after the convention.

Romney blew through his primary money destroying his GOP opponents. Now he has to wait until Labor Day weekend before he can spend any money against Obama. It’s not that they think that they can afford to wait until after the convention; it’s that they don’t have any other option.

Obama had no primary opponent, so he’s using all of his primary money to establish Romney as an unacceptable alternative before he gets a chance to introduce himself to the broader electorate. He hopes to raise Romney’s negatives up high enough that people won’t even listen to what Romney has to say once he starts talking. Just one more advantage of being the incumbent.

  • earlgrey

say when he has the $$ to spend.

    http://www.commentarymagazine.com/2012/08/10/romneys-strategy-isnt-working/

Attached it seems like he needs to change his approach and I dont’ see it in the campaign to do that.

I also think Romney is more inclined to defend the american free enterprise system than himself–hence the personal attacks work because they don’t seem to bother romney, but if you tell a businessman he didn’t build his business romney is all over that.

  • CrabCakes

As of now, the Obama campaign’s strategy is to poison the well. If Romney is a tax-dodging vulture capitalist whose business dealings killed a woman, then why should the electorate believe anything that he has to say?

It honestly astounds me that Romney has so much money behind him but that it is being spent so poorly.

  • Viet71

    Just that simple.

He’d be a better president by far than O.

But he has no sense how he’s perceived by the electorate — Left, Right, and Middle. Complaining about Obama attack ads is a losing strategy.
