Fredheadedness 3 — Conservative Discipleship

Back to Conservatism School - Know what we believe, then TEACH it to the people

Current events are what they are, and the reasons for the 2008 and 2006 disasters are for other discussions. Where to go from here, party purges, fighting the treason media, buying up strategic treason media outlets [business genius Romney agrees with EPU on this -- eat that, you doubters], also for other discussions. Today I want to talk about conservative discipleship.

For the purposes of this discussion I will refer to conservatism as that philosophy taught by Russell Kirk, co-founder of the 20th-century resurrection of conservatism — along with his friends and compatriots William F Buckley and Barry Goldwater — and the faithful disciple of Edmund Burke, the Father of conservatism. But this is not going to be a treatise on specifics.

Rather, this is a plea, a call to the troops — learn it, live it, fight for it, and most importantly TEACH it. This last step, I believe, is perhaps where conservatives fail, in an area we could and should PWN those lying, cheating, venal Democrats. Certainly after the Conservative Revolution of 1994, it is widely agreed (20/20 hindsight) that we, after winning the Congress in one large, stunning upset, assumed foolishly that the American people got conservatism, that the battle for hearts and minds had been won. We paid a dear price for that. Now history is going to repeat. In the next two years the Dems will run this country into the ground economically and militarily, taking away as many rights as possible — and the Repubs are poised to come roaring back in 2010. At that time, we want to be on message, ready to teach America and lead it back to greatness. So, let’s start boning up now, friends.

For discipleship training, observe how it was done in the Bible. [And if that offends you, then I'll offend you further -- bite me, pal. I got nothing against atheists, but I've grown weary of bigots. You should embrace the benefits of wisdom from those who came before you when it presents itself, and you are a stupid dolt if you do not. Savvy?]

2 Timothy 2:2 (NASB)
The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

Note that there are 4 generations here.

  • The teacher (Paul)
  • The prize student (Timothy)
  • ‘faithful men’, men that Timothy will teach what he was taught by Paul
  • ‘others also’, a future fourth generation of adherents to Paul’s teaching

Discipleship is done hands-on. Jesus had 12. He had thousands upon thousands of followers, but 12 disciples, whom he poured His heart into and taught carefully. In the final accounting, 10 of the 12 died deaths as martyrs (1 was a traitor, and John, well he simply would not die). They taught, they planted churches all across the Roman Empire. The second generation of disciples was martyred mercilessly, yet the Gospel spread like wildfire. It was said by Christians that the blood of the saints was the seed of the next generation of Christians. Polycarp learned at the feet of John (the disciple of Jesus), and his statement at his own execution (at a stadium in Rome, presumably the Coliseum?) is one for the ages.

Polycarp had been well-taught by John, who had been well-taught by Jesus. He had the courage of his convictions, and he both taught and lived them – obedient even to death to what John had taught him. Polycarp’s prize disciple was Iranaeus, who later was instrumental in finally putting the heresy of Gnosticism to the dagger.

So conservative discipleship includes careful teaching. It requires that you and I hold conservative principles near to our hearts. It requires that we be willing to fight for them. For example, fighting the good fight to get conservatives into leadership positions in the House and Senate, state Houses, the Republican Party (RNC Chair). It requires we fight the local school boards when they go STUPID LIBERAL on us. It requires that we face down the Treason Media. It requires that we do our dead-level best to get Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Kent Conrad into prison for the Fannie/Freddie mess and their part in it.

I believe that the heart of America is center-right, and I believe that if Americans are properly TAUGHT conservative principles, ALL across the spectrum, in grassroots, from the well of the Senate and House, from pundits on FoxNews (between yelling matches) and at RedState, TMR, NR, Human Events, Townhall, Powerline, NextRight, letters to editors, op-eds, on college campuses (underground, of course), and so on — and if in addition the Republican Party ran leader-type, courageous conservative candidates teaching conservatism — we would storm back into political power and rescue the nation from socialism, confiscatory taxes, social engineering, suppressed freedoms and compass-free moral decay. If we keep it up, we could contemplate the possibility of a permanent majority.

Truth resonates in peoples’ hearts. Conservatism is not always immediately intuitive. Policies like welfare reform, capital punishment, DE-regulation, lowering taxes on corporations, these things require just a little thought or guidance. Not all that much, but the treason media have so poisoned the people with respect to conservatism, that it does have to be taught.

But let me say again. Americans are center-right. When they hear conservative truth presented well, their hearts resonate with “yeah. That’s what I always thought was true, but nobody says that anymore.” I’ll not beat the dead horse here about who should have been the GOP nominee, but Fred Thompson did what I’m talking about – he is this generation’s conservative beacon, because he TEACHES conservatism in ways that real and normal people respond to.

Today I’m not teaching the Kirk principles, although very soon I’ll resume the Fredhead series on those. We have several diarists who are taking up the mantle with some good stuff. Today I am just making the point. Let’s start learning and getting solid on the fundamentals. Start now. Load your armory with all the Kirk, Reagan, and Fred you can get your hands on — and Sowell, Goldwater, Limbaugh (Dve & Rush) as well — , with the purpose in mind that you are going to sell it and teach it to your friends at work and church, your clubs, your pool hall, your newspaper editors, your radio call in shows, and of course RedState, TMR, Townhall, LGF, Malkin, and so on.

You might even start infiltrating HuffPo, Digg, comment sections on articles at ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, NYT, WaPo, LATimes, and your local paper’s website. If you bring the basics (rather than leading off with ‘abortion is MURDER’), you can teach people who are willing to be taught.

So, have we an accord? Shall we learn, with a view toward teaching America?

Unfair. Unbalanced. Unmedicated. — Frank J.

I heard themes similar to this at least 4 times last week

Dave_in_Fla (Diary) Tuesday, November 18th at 2:30AM EDT (link)

The cult of personality is a losing proposition for conservatives, which makes trying to emulate Obama problematic. It also makes early horse race commitment to particular candidates (Palin! Jindal! Sanford!) an exercise in futility. It is much better to believe in our principles and fight for them, than to believe in an individual. When the time comes, it will be incumbent on us to select a candidate who supports our principles and can act as an effective leader and communicator to the voters.

which may have been your point as well. That cult of personality doesn’t do much for conservatives. Obama made me sick, not swoon.

Sure, we remember President Reagan, Buckley, Goldwater, Kirk, and some others; but it was because of their principled stands and philosophy of government – not because they were wonderful speakers who tugged at the heartstrings and made us feel all tingly.

“After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the government then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence: it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd.”

Alexis de Tocqueville –

“Whenever the legislators endeavor to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are thereupon absolved from any farther obedience, and are left to the common refuge which God hath provided for all men against force and violence.”

Well said, I totally agree. And I also agree with DaveinFla and tcgeol’s comments regarding the cult of personality. We should rather become a ‘cult’ (hate that word, BTW) of ideas. Personalities will eventually fail us.

I lean on the ideas of Thomas Sowell quite a lot. As a living proponent of the “constrained vision”, his ideas of conservatism have current application.

I’m afraid we’ll have ample material from the Democrats in congress & Obama. 1994 was a watershed election because we were galvanized on the full conservative message of strong national security, conservative social values, & limited government fiscally responsible conservatism. Our leaders broke the fiscal responsibile limited government conservative leg off the stool, & we must restore it & push our leaders to do the same or get out of the way.

Geez, EPU, for a $billion and change conservatives could *buy* the NYT.

E Pluribus Unum- I have only been a member here for a few months, and have not seen your Fredhead diaries. I guess I was too busy being a Fredhead during his campaign, and then after a protracted period of mourning after he dropped out, I spent hours and days hoping that somehow McCain would not make it to the convention and Fred would ride in to save the day. You know, those kinds of times when you want something so badly you might be willing to give up your oldest to get it (especially the teenagers).

I look forward to whatever it is that you write about Fred and his Stand Strong Conservatism. I have heard so many times that “When Fred talks, people listen”, and I believe that even includes the Dims.

How about tactics?

youthgrunt (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 12:08PM EDT (link)

I agree with you–and look forward to an engaging discussion on conservative principles and issues.

But I wonder if we need some thoughtful discussion on tactics. I have been reading Alinsky and have come to realize that the current Democrat victories are linked to smart tactics described by Alinsky 37 years ago.

I wouldn’t propose that we use the Radical’s tactics, but we better learn from them and develop tactics of our own for dealing with our current situation.

Calm Common Sense versus Knee-Jerk Emotionalism

JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 1:13PM EDT (link)

Thank you for this wonderful diary. I have a feeling many people aren’t so much “on the left” as reacting with knee-jerk emotionalism to a perception that lacks cold, hard facts and reason.

The best example I can think of is my friend in Boston, who grew up under the tutelage of her unabashedly communist father. She had lots of high-minded ideas about sharing the wealth and “being fair” to the less fortunate. But then, because of her own hard work and savings, she became the proud owner of a 3-family in Beantown and had to deal with (1) tenants and (2) Section 8 tenants.

She now votes Republican, much to the consternation of her family! Amazing what a dose of reality can do for “ideals”.

(And thank you for the story of Polycarp, too. I had to go look that one up, and it was well worth it!)

Good post, I agree with it, but I’m discovering brick walls when I discuss conservative principles with clueless Obama voters. We are fighting a cult of personality, a dearth of rationality over emotion, and a knee-jerk objection to anything that is pro-individual and anti-government.

I don’t want to just label my co-workers idiots, but when they come to me with comments about Obama (I never initiate these) and find out I am conservative, I get the most amazing, mind-boggling idiocies out of them. I think I have a gift. I actually got the “one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter” trope of lunatic excrement on election night. Then the insults toward Republicans began. I had to get rude with this co-worker to make him stop and we haven’t spoken since. (Since we all work remote this was in IM so the opportunity for offenses is a lot greater.)

Are we all hitting brick walls of stupidity or is there hope? Considering these types know Sarah Palin’s bra size but don’t know Biden is the veep-elect much less who Bill Ayers is, I wonder. I really do.

I agree – failed liberal policies are a great teacher, if only we get busy and TEACH the lessons. Apparently 52% of Americans can look right at the truth and not see it.

PWN – I figured you were all over that, but as bs links up, to ‘pwn’ is to ‘own’ somebody, to dunk on somebody, to school them, in the sense that Kobe owns….well, pretty much anybody.

I loved reading all of your diaries. Great writings. I hope you don’t mind that I will link this diary over at Fred’s Pac site. There are many there that will appreciate your words.

I look forward to hearing more from you, especially when it comes to the Conservative Disciple Fred Thompson.

I have already read it, Aaron.

The whole thing is ‘net folklore, but the assumption is that someone, at some point, meant to type “owned” but instead missed the “o” and hit “p” instead. So now, if you see an incident where someone was dominated, and you would have said “Wow, he was OWNED on that one” you could show your net-savvy and say “Wow, he was PWND on that one” (dropping the other vowel is also trendy).

Don’t get me wrong, I do understand the intellectuals that vote for someone like BHO, I fought with them for most of my adult life, but the foot soldiers, the voters, are simply useful idiots.

on their own. I don’t believe in the perfectability of man, but I do believe that some people can on their own improve themselves. Some do and reach another level of social existence. When we were a sane country, we didn’t let those who couldn’t fend for themselves particiapate in government and made up for that by the solemn oath that government would protect their rights. Somewhere in there, we threw the baby out with the bathwater.

And I get out plenty, thank you very much, and living, as I do, in the Puget Sound region, I have ample opportunity to encounter idiots.

All I’m saying is that we shouldn’t write off everyone who’s young, poor or stupid. They can’t all be as stupid as the people in that video.

My daughter from my first marriage left Juneau just after hearing Pomp and Circumstance in ’94. She left here about as conservative as a recent college graduate can be. A few years in SEA and the computer industry has made family get-togethers REAL TENSE. It’s in that Puget Sound water or something. I think if I ever do the Inside Passage and bring my boat down there, even an inanimate object like a boat will always turn left.

I am finding

youthgrunt (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 8:43AM EDT (link)

I find Alinsky very relevant. As Achance says, it is a good “know your enemy” primer–and it scares me.

I disagree that the tactics would only work for the poor and ignorant–he was trying to tap into the middle class with these tactics just as much as the poor. The problem is that Alinsky was immoral and many of the tactics he proposes we would not use because they are simply wrong (from a moral standpoint).

But there are things that we can learn from him. One of his rules is to keep the pressure on. We failed to do that in ’94 and paid the price for it. I think we need to consider how to make liberal organizations live up to their own rules to our advantage. We need to relearn the lesson that he teaches about coalitions (we seem to spend more time breaking up our coalitions rather than learning to work with them).

Finally, in response to Achance, I would say that there are places that we could make inroads into the poor, etc. You cannot do so in a way that compromises our values, but the reality is that in many ways the poor and uneducated are still conservative in many ways. For instance, African-Americans are some of the biggest supporters of school choice. This is OUR issue. Organizing them for school choice can put them in OUR coalition rather than the Dems.

EPU, I tend to be the way you are–a talker. But SOMEONE better start organizing or we will be a dead party.

Exactly what we've been discussing

peg_c (Diary) Thursday, November 20th at 8:57AM EDT (link)

in our house, now that hubby has 2% lifted the moratorium on any political discussion.

He thinks the Dems will destroy this country’s institutions in the next 4 years. I think they will try (some want them destroyed, many are just plain dolts) but I am hopeful that the pain we are to experience will cause a revolt. Apparently I am delirious and fooling myself.

The strategy for us as conservatives is not only to clearly articulate conservative principles, but to aggressively educate our friends and co-workers when the Dem policy blowback hits critical mass (since it has already started) that it is DEM POLICY causing the damage and misery and not Republican (Bush) policy. This will not be easy. That Zogby moron on the street poll and that video showed that a shocking number of average Dem ignoramus voters believe Congress is Republican-majority held. We are fighting a virulent ignorance and utter lack of curiosity and any willingness to doubt the MSM and self-educate. Some of those boobs were laughing at their own ignorance.

Fighting this is our mission. This will require armor-piercing bullets, maybe rocket-propelled grenades to the head.

Government cannot be the solution when government is the problem.

redneck_hippie (Diary) Friday, November 21st at 7:27AM EDT (link)

Exactly. My own child was spouting the MSM hype about the terrible Bush economy when the Dow was at 14,000, unemployment was practically nonexistent, and her and her husband were raking in earnings to beat the band. In other words they were fairly typical middle class people with good work ethics.

That whole “well, I and my family are prosperous, but those other guys are hurting” mentality.

Then there are those who screech that there are more poor people in America than ever before. What else would be the consequence of open borders attracting more poor people than ever?
