Vitter, DeMint, et al: time to go Patrick Henry on Obama’s assault on conservatives


It is now officially time: burn the Obama brownshirt agenda to the ground. Sift the ashes. Grind the shards into powder.

Now, the official Obama administration policy is that being a conservative makes you a threat to the security of America (actual report in pdf form here). Being a military veteran makes you doubly suspect as a dangerous subversive. It is clear from Napolitano’s non-apology when cornered on it, that the directive came from higher up [i.e., Obama himself], and further, that they have no intention of backing down on it.

Yesterday, seven GOP Senators (some of our favorites) sent a letter to Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano. It was a sharply toned letter, with pointed, well-formed questions that indeed demand answers that all of America would like to hear. Warner Todd Huston has the details, including the text of the letter and the signees.

But the Senators did not go far enough. It is time to draw the line : This far, and no further. Follow the jump to see the letter they should have written.

They take territory, we fall back. They grow an obscenely large and intrusive government bit by bit, we accept it. They take the courts, we retreat and regroup. They turn public schools and universities into indoctrination camps. And still, we retreat. They blatantly steal Senate seats [Stevens and Coleman, this time around], publicly laugh about it, and we fall back.

No more.

“I will not sacrifice the Enterprise. We’ve made too many compromises already, too may retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no farther! And I will make them pay for what they’ve done!”

In case you think a sci-fi movie quote is too trite, then I’ll just say we’ve been here before. In REAL history, in a REAL war, under REAL oppression. Patrick Henry put it this way.

Let us not deceive ourselves, sir. These are the implements of war and subjugation…. They are meant for us; they can be meant for no other. They are sent over to bind and rivet upon us those chains which the British ministry have been so long forging. And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Have we anything new to offer on the subject? Nothing.

We have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament.

They tell us, sir, that we are weak — unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house?

There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable — and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come!

It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, “Peace! Peace!” — but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!

Fellas, did you SEE the Tea Parties? Do you think you are in this alone? You are most assuredly not. The masses are with you. The media is not, but have you no courage in the face of those embarrassingly infantile hacks and liars?

Now here’s the letter you should have written. No questions, there is no need, when you know the answers.

Dear Secretary Napolitano:

Here’s the deal.

  • You can retract and dismantle that whole report, the policy that the report underwrites, and the entire program you intend to implement on the basis of it.
  • You personally make a nationally-broadcast, prime-time apology for using your position to try to outlaw conservatism.
  • Then you can resign. You are unworthy and unable to be a servant of the United States.

Failing that, the 41 will turn the Senate into a great big hole that legislation falls into. We, the 41, will filibuster every single thing that comes through the Senate that can be filibustered, from now until Jan 2 of 2011. That means:

  • No more appointments.
  • No more judges. Unless, of course, you want to confirm Henry Saad for appeals court.
  • No more continuing resolutions. Except for funding of the troops.
  • and for darned sure no more porkulus.

All business is done, until you do all those things. If you think we are bluffing, call it. We’ll be happy to make this the front-page headline every day until the government shuts down and bureaucrats get laid off by the thousand.

you are correct. The seven cannot do anything alone and there still does not seem to be one voice for the 41 or the GOP for that matter. The DHS report was an attack on the 2008 GOP platform and very few elected GOP elected officials have responded. Has the RNC responded? This report was an outrage and it is being treated like a mild insult.

Trust me on this, we have about 50 Senators that “disagree with the DHS report” . That’s not even a secret. What we need are 41 with the courage of their convictions.

Look we got 38 to oppose porkulus. The 3 that didn’t are regretting it, big-time, and that includes Specter. You take a GOP Senator retreat, and men and women with character take charge, make Pat-Henry speeches, and persuade them all that if we do not hang together, we shall assuredly hang separately.

You remember how the Declaration of Independence ends? No? Read this:

I don’t think you could be that bad. I used to be the worst cook in the world. I’m not joking. My mother tried to teach me and, being a hillbilly and in spite of the surreality of the Beverly Hillbillies, I was Ellie Mae Clampett.

Now, I learn to cook by taste. I taste something in a restaurant that I really like, I can go home and make it provided I have the ingredients available. Hubby, being from MS and living a lot of his early life in LA simply told me what went into gumbo and now, he can’t eat anyone else’s.

Except fish. I can’t ever seem to do a good fish fry. I can blacken it, grill it, etc. but not fry it and have it come out right.

Right on the money EPU. It’s time for the conservatives to stand up and go to the mat on this. For too long CongressCritters have done what they wanted to and have made a complete mess out of things.

It is now the time to draw a line in the sand and say “Enough”. Quit being progressive Republicans and start voting conservative or go find another day job.

We need people with the strength of their convictions and character to fight this restructuring America movement. The founding fathers did this in much worse times, why can’t we find enough solid conservatives to do the right thing?

To think, we could have had Sen. Thompson and we got the complete opposite because he said what people wanted to hear.

It’s not out of the question that the 2009 TEA party participants could someday be respected by history as patriots who made a difference- same as 1773. This was just the sort of public demonstration of outrage that’s needed to break through the media’s disingenuous, manufactured version of reality- and draw a line in the sand… and it was a HUGE success.

The vast majority of Americans DON’T want a massive government sector and all the weird totalitarian schemes Barack has up his sleeve- and now they’re starting to figure out just what he’s up to. I’m sorry to dissent, but the report doesn’t express concern for conservatism; it’s about extremism, clearly about terrorist behavior like “the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and disrupted plots.”

This is like a Muslim community blog objecting to the “Bin Laden determined to strike in US” briefing.

Unless this emotional appeal is built on a faulty premise, it seems to imply that the author sees a link between conservative ideals and a penchant to subvert a democratically elected government. If there is such a link, then you are proving the very concerns of the DHS document.

Being one of those extremists in multiple ways as defined by DHS, I have been pushing at the 912ers meetings and website postings, tea party organizational meetings, and even hinted in my one tea party speech that if the tea party grass roots rallies do not move congress, and they apparently haven’t yet by recent votes since the tea parties started on February 16th, then following MLK’s civil rights movement tactics, picketing of local congressional offices of the politicians voting for spend and tax should commence. If that doesn’t work, then it would be on to civil disobedience with sit-ins. Of course this was the type of tactics that Shays’ people utilized in 1786 that led to the rebellion when the state government ignored their more civil actions. Hopefully congress is more astute than was the Massachusetts government in Shays time or Southern Democrats were during the civil rights movement.

The Greatest Generation saved our nation from Fascism so we owe future generations a serious effort to return to the economic and personal freedom they fought so bravely to retain. As I expected I have convinced few people of the necessity of such actions; therefore I may have go it alone.

Empty threats

Except for the fact that this proposed letter would just be an empty threat. There aren’t 41 senators who would do that.

But maybe we can vote all the “moderates” out (probably about 30 GOP Senators who would not sign this). Then we’d have the Democrats right we want them - with about 75 seats in the Senate.

You see, the problem is not that our Senators lack backbone. The problem is that we lack Senators, and we lack voters. Until more people want Republicans to win, this type of gesture is futile.

we got 38 out of 41 to vote against Porkulus. The 3 that did not have been paying the price. Every single Senator knows what happened in about 500 Tea Parties on the 15th.

But you, along with the establishment Republicans, will allow for no courage, no new spark set off by the tea parties, the nation-wide revolt over porkulus, the more and more evident lack of leadership qualities shown by Obama.

No, nothing can change. There’s no hope, no point in even trying to stir up something.

Do you know the context of Patrick Henry’s speech? Do you? The VA legislature was trying to figure out yet newer ways to kowtow to increasingly oppressive British demands. While Massachusetts was in full rebellion, VA was shirking any hard choices. They even met in Williamsburg in order to not draw negative attention from the Brits. Henry had had enough, so he made his speech. In the audience were Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, who sat in stunned silence when he was done.

He made a difference. It required SOMEBODY to make a stand.

Poo hoo it all you want. I’d rather die than surrender.

Some reporter did the math and said on the radio that this was less than two-thousandths of a per cent of the entire spending Teleprompter Boy has proposed and you clowns will allow him to pass.
