Do you know what a long, difficult road must be followed to become a one-star general? Or, how much training and leadership experience does it take to be the current commander of Task Force Hope, the Army Corps of Engineers’ effort supporting FEMA’s national response plan to Hurricane Katrina?
Brigadier General Micheal Walsh knows. His bio fairly bristles with educational excellence and impressive accomplishments of a fairly unglamorous kind. Just read that bio. Read. That. Bio. His previous gig was Commander of the Gulf Region Division in Baghdad - i.e., in charge of rebuilding the infrastructure of Iraq that was run down under 30 years of war and dictatorship.
Yet while giving testimony the other day to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, this thoroughly competent leader and engineer was held up to mockery by the most shrill and arguably the most stupid person in the Senate.
.
Barby, we’ll take a look at all that “hard work” you did to become the stupidest person in the Senate. But first, I want to review some of General Walsh’s credentials, because admit it, dear reader, you didn’t read the bio, did you?
Education:
- BS, Civil Engineering, Polytechnic Institute of New York
- Masters, Construction Management, University of Florida (go Gators!!!)
- Engineer Officers Basic and Advanced Courses
- U.S. Army Command and General Staff College
- U.S. Army War College
Commands (somewhat abbreviated, because you really should read the bio):
- District Commander of the Corps’ San Francisco District, San Francisco, Calif., from 1994 to 1996
- District Commander of the Corps’ Sacramento District, Sacramento, Calif., from 1998 to 2001
- Executive Director of Civil Works at Corps headquarters, Washington, D.C., from August 2001 to May 2003
- Chief of Staff at Corps headquarters, Washington, D.C., from May 2003 to June 2004
- Commander of the Corps’ South Atlantic Division, Atlanta, Ga., from June 2004 to September 2006
- Commander for the Corps’ Gulf Region Division, 2006 to 2008
#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&#&
Now, back to Barby Boxer, who is insistent that she “worked so hard to get that title”. What did she do, exactly [all the below is from Wikipedia]?
Educationally:
- BA in Economics
Non-political experience:
- stockbroker for 3 years.
- Married a slip-and-fall attorney. No, for real. Her husband works workman’s compensation cases, on the side of employees, mostly referred to him by the Teamsters and other unions.
- Apparently wrote for a time for something called the Pacific Sun.
Political career:
- was an aide to Congressman John Burton for several years.
- Was elected to the Marin County Board of Supervisors (when you leave San Fran via the Golden Gate Bridge, you go to Marin County)
- Served 10 years in the US House, where she
- was one of many House members ensnared in the House banking scandal, having overdrafted her account 87 times.
- accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harrassment, and led a group of female House members on a march to the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings to demand that Anita Hill be taken seriously.
- In 1992, she ran for the US Senate, in the wake of the retirement of Democrat Alan Cranston, who held the seat for 24 years. She won by 3% against Bruce Herschensohn, after a convenient October Surprise, a last-minute revelation that he had visited a strip club. No, that’s not a misprint.
- In Jan 2005, she filed a Senate motion (in support of a similar House motion filed by Stephanie Jones (D, OH-11)) objecting to the certification of Ohio’s slate of Electors in the election (Bush won Ohio by 2.1%, about 120,000 votes). The motion was voted down 1-74.
So, in the conversation above, there’s one very impressive individual, and one inconsequential idiot. Not only is she alot less accomplished than the man she slighted, she objected to being called “ma’am” rather than “Senator”. Besides the fact that “ma’am” is in almost every instance a term of respect and deference, it is a proper term of military respect for all female officers superior in rank to yourself ["sir" obviously works for male superior officers]. It is stupid and arrogant almost beyond comprehension to have taken General Walsh to task for that.
She did not work hard for her job. She hacked and smeared her way to her position, benefiting from an October Surprise, and has done nothing to distinguish herself since. And now that we know how much she loves to demand respect not earned, I say let’s give her NONE.

hoosierteacher Friday, June 19th at 4:30PM EDT (link)Rick, we all agree that Barbie was being an idiot, and we all agree that she is not in the General’s chain of command. I hope the heat gets turned up over this episode.
But one tiny point (and it is VERY tiny) about the chain of command thing. Commissions for military officers are granted by the congress, not the executive branch. This in no way clears Senator Airhead, and in no way takes away from your point about chain of command. It is just a point that is worth noting in the conversation.
I hope that her office faces enough pressure from somewhere that she is forced to make an apology. A real commander in chief (even from the same party as the offender) would call the senator’s office. Alas….

Leatherneck Friday, June 19th at 4:13PM EDT (link)When I first heard of Barbara Boxer’s comments, I was mucho pissed. Then after reading EPU’s tale of the tape, I actually feel sorry for her. It’s clear to me she’s very insecure in front of actual, accomplished professionals.
I only wish Rummy was there to respond. Can you imagine?
Here’s some Rummy insight:
“Members of the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate are not there by accident. Each managed to get there for some reason. Learn what it was and you will know something important about them, about our country and about the American people.”
Boxer ought to learn that the military EARNS & DESERVES....

EPU, I think your tone is just a bit extreme here
smagar Friday, June 19th at 3:32PM EDT (link)I heard what Boxer said. She sounded goofy and dumb, but not intentionally mean. I didn’t think she was trying to insult the BG. Instead, it sounded as if she was so vain that she was pleading with him to be addressed by the flashier title of “Senator.”
You’ll get no disagreement from me that Barbara Boxer is dumb, dumb, dumb. Why Californians keep reelecting her, I’ll never know. Are they deliberately trying to screw up the country?
But, being a vain moron isn’t the same thing as being mean and disrespectful to our military.
If we overplay our hand here, she can play victim to a sympathetic national and California MSM and slink away from this.
Let’s not overstate what she did…because what she really did is bad enough. It’s more than enough ammo with which to ridicule her again and again.
Once we get people laughing at her, she’ll feel compelled to come out and respond…at which point she’ll say even more stupid things.
This woman can be the gift that keeps on giving, if we’re careful with how we handle her.

E Pluribus Unum Friday, June 19th at 3:52PM EDT (link)But isn’t the obvious subtext of her little snit that the General is mistreating her somehow and needs to be publicly slapped down for his arrogance?

I guess I'm remembering Rick Lazio's experience
smagar Friday, June 19th at 9:59PM EDT (link)The NY media was just looking for reasons to demonize him and stick up for Poor Little Hillary. When he encroached on her space in their first debate, asking her to sign some sort of pledge, you could literally hear the NY media hitting its knees in relief, saying Thank you, thank you!
IIRC, Boxer plays the feminist card to the hilt. She’s NOW’s Senator.
The CA media will do their best to cover for her. They’ll be looking for reasons to NOT cover stories of her stupidity. If she can get a martyr thing going, it will help her slip away.
It didn’t sound that way to me. You’re right—I didn’t hear the whole clip. And I certainly think Boxer deserves any derision she gets.
But I still think we should be cautious about not overreaching. I don’t think it’s good tactics.
“Who will stand/On either hand/And guard this bridge with me?” (Macaulay)
Voters get really turned off by Boxer's style of arrogance
jonreagan Friday, June 19th at 4:03PM EDT (link)I think this remark was really about ideology, and Boxer’s contempt for the military. It was petty and arrogant, and she was simply trying to embarrass a man whose shoes she isn’t fit to shine.
I don’t think voters in 2010 would appreciate watching their Senator—a candidate for reelection—dress down a Brigadier General in a Senate hearing. This clip would make a great 30-second spot, portraying this 30-year member of Congress as out of ideas, and out of touch. George Allen lost a reelection bid for a remark which, while out of line, was far less offensive than this.
Not in CA It Won't

Boxer may be vulnerable in 2010
jonreagan Saturday, June 20th at 12:31AM EDT (link)Right now it feels a lot like 1993, with team Obama stumbling badly, and the White House in disarray. The worst hits they suffered this week come from Democrats—Max Baucus and Tom Daschle—and that’s definitely not a good sign for Barack and Company.
If the 2010 midterms are anything like what happened in 1994, we’ll pick up seats in places nobody imagined (remember the Speaker of the House being defeated in ‘94?) As to CA, Feinstein barely beat back a challenge from Michael Huffington that year (wow, what an awful choice…..) I’d also keep in mind that Prop 8 passed last November, and voters just slapped down Arnold’s efforts to pass new taxes.
At this point, I think Chris Dodd and Boxer both look vulnerable in 2010. Both have been around too long, and both violate one of the cardinal rules in politics: it helps to be liked.
Just lvm

Abortion!
noufa Sunday, June 21st at 11:11PM EDT (link)That issue alone gives Boxer a base of committed activists. There isn’t a strong pro-life movement in CA to counter it.
I’ve spent time living in & outside of CA. Anecdotal experience tells me that the pro-lifers are not taken serious at the state level. Here’s a well-done (even though written by a lefty) article with polling results which back up my claim:
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2009/06/pro-life-states-have-lower-abortion.html
Parts of CA have a libertarian streak. Most of these voters are even quietly pro-life. So the Republican Party can make inroads in the Golden State. But there just isn’t an effective network of pro-lifers in CA.
Good news is that in the long run, Republicans will win on abortion.
